I just overpaid for a coin with a pedigree I've wanted for a long time

Paid through the nose, I did, and got some sticker shock after the buyer's fee, but by golly I prevailed, and after wanting one for a long time, I am finally the owner of a piece of the John Quincy Adams & descendants collection. I too happen to be a descendant of the sixth US president, so it's coming "back into the family", you might say. You can see why it was a "must have" pedigree for me to add to my collection.

My stern-looking ancestor as an old man, circa 1843-48:

The coin is a Roman Republican denarius.

That is really cool, and i agree the family connection made it a "must have" lol :D A bit of a high bid, but if it comes with the proof of pedigree (and that's no minor pedigree) I can see it being worth well above expected value of just the coin :D

Congrats and it's a nice coin. I've always wanted that type too. And linked old family, why not?

To think, your great-great-great grandpa (or whatever it is) held that coin in his hands, pretty cool! Let alone the fact that, while he wasn't holding ancient coins, he was running the country!

BTW, I'm working really hard on avoiding the ban-hammer by not busting out a wisecrack about certain aspects of the reverse. Forced conformity to political correctness is torturous :(

Bet that's one you won't be giving away in a contest! Not into ancients but understand why that one is special to you! Congrats!!

It IS rather *ahem* … anatomical. But since that’s in a Classical Roman context, it makes it PG- rather than R-rated.

A fantastic silver denarius. I think you paid for the provenence and pedigree as much as the coin. Great addition for you.

I wasn't trying to insinuate that posting the coin was inappropriate. It is the joke that I wanted to post about it that would have been problematic ;)

That's a very worthwhile coin by itself, the pedigree adds to the interest, and if that famous former owner were also an ancestor of mine, I'd have no qualms at all in paying a premium. Nice snag!

Congratulations!! Time to send it to NGC along with the provenance
proof and have them put the proof on the label. I'm sure they will
accommodate your request with an oversized holder. ie: One for
the 5 ounce silver quarters. Plenty of room on the label for provenance
and the large size to keep from getting lost.

That is so cool! Congratulations @lordmarcovan !!! The provenance history alone makes it an amazing collectible.

Congratulations. As everyone knows I have an example from the JQA collection and I was just as excited to have it in my collection (athough there is no relation - as far as I know). I don't have access to my catalog to provide the full attribution.

I intend to do just that, though I’m hoping they’ll fit the pedigree on the label for a standard sized holder. I don’t want any oversized holders due to storage issues and the display conflict it would cause with my current albums and safe deposit storage boxes.

@Bing - that’s a very nice Vespasian! Desirable even without the pedigree.

My thinking, my @lordmarcovan, is this. You wanted it. It came up for sale. You were able to buy it. 'Nuff said! I'm very happy for you. If a coin comes available that I've wanted, and if I have the money at the time, I don't consider if it's a "good buy" or not. I consider it a successful acquisition! My coin collecting is a hobby, not an investment. Sometimes my hobby costs me a little money, sometimes it doesn't. But, I'm happy with my "hobby"!

Exactly. It’s not like I bought the thing to flip it.
