We all loved Furry. I think he got caught up in the middle of a heated political argument that must have gone over the edge of what is acceptable to the forum. Subsequently a number of other members followed suit arguing over Furry's demise and did the same. We lost some mighty good folks due to bickering in a short span. Breaks my old heart.

Bing is still around, albeit not so often. His birthday just passed so wish him well in the next year :)

FurryFrog got mad over a profile picture. Miss him but the consequence fit the transgression.

Some folks left because they assumed he was baited when it simply was not so.

Furryfrog is still around on the inter webs though. He is on Reddit with his coin stuff. I don't use that site but there is a decent coin-munity there. A few users here have his email if you need to reach out about something.

Many cointalkers have moved on to NumisForums, including a lot of familiar faces like @stevex6 who were banned over the years. It's now much more active than the ancients forum here.

I was fortunate enough to be on a break from the interweb when it all happened.
This did however afford me the opportunity to look at it with fresh & unbiased eyes :jawdrop:

It did make me wonder if the initial action was a deliberate attempt to instigate an Exodus ;)

The forum popped up after the "exodus" as both banned members and others who largely have wanted a new place to congregate for a while got together. After some discussion about what was best to do next, NumisForums was the result, but realistically it's been a long time coming. Many people were fed up with mod decisions here for various reasons.

In my own view there was never any attempt by the moderators here to actually listen to feedback from members of the ancients forum and even worse than that one of the admins actually slandered a former member in a group discussion when several of us asked for him to be unbanned. The fact that there would be an event that would cause a mass exodus sooner or later should have been obvious. I'm surprised it took as long as it did.

I was also on a bit of a hiatus during that time, so didn't get the full picture. But, from what I've been able to gather: A group of childish people became emotionally destabilized when another childish person used a Confederate Battle Flag in their avatar.

If modern American politics has taught us anything, it is that confrontations between groups of childish people are never productive.

It kind of sucks that the forum isn't as active as it used to be, but honestly, I don't really miss those that took off. They tended to take the hobby a bit too seriously as a whole, which isn't really a problem except that they were judgmental toward others for not living up to their standards. I won't get into specifics, but they also displayed some hero-worshipping tendencies to a degree that was kinda cringey.

I was there when apocalipsis happen. The REAL problem was that administrators did not want to apply THEIR OWN RULES about political discussion or avatar. So that is why many member leave

I am not surprised by it since remember, the incoming of the group at large was from ANOTHER forum they left en masse. So I kind of expected them to be here for a while and then again jump ship for another location at some point. Regarding the avatar in question, I weighed in at the time how a battle flag to a war veteran like me is unrelated to politics, but my view was also ignored. So, in my mind, both sides were not listening to the other.

I am on here some, on reddit some, and Numisforums some. Problem is I have many numismatic pursuits and interests, so Numisforums is mainly ancients, reddit is full of lots of newbies but some very serious members, (for good and bad, I got chewed out for not recognizing an unusual large RR bronze I had not seen before and the OP did not state it was from an old collection, I assumed like most I have seen it was a fake), and CT seems to fit my varied interest better. All have good and bad aspects, and maybe I am old and set in my ways but just prefer it here. Plus, how can I be away from buddies like @-jeffB, @Randy Abercrombie, etc?

I am fully aware of all of what you say @red_spork and am on the other site posting.
I too was surprised that it took so long for folks to set up their own site when they clearly didn't like the way things were done here.

HOW it happened is what caught my attention, not Why ;)

There seems to be a lot of anger between Americans right now and it is unfortunately spilling over into places it should not be.

PLEASE don't think i am defending CT in any way, the admin should be ashamed of themselves. ( the opposite is most likely closer to the truth )

What followed was a hot mess and i am so glad that i was on a break from the interweb when it kicked off.

So, do you understand THEIR OWN RULES? I actually thought they were pretty consistent.

And, how can you consistently apply rules like this when no two individuals will ever fully agree on the definition of "political"? It varies from person to person, but in extreme cases the definition of this word has morphed into something like, "Anything that upsets any person to any degree". This type of definition can be leveraged to include just about any statement of opinion or expression that a person could possibly make.

The consequence of over-enforcing these types of rules would be a forum where all opinions, criticisms, or truth seeking would be eliminated. If that is the case, then the value of the forum is narrowed to the point of uselessness.

The consequence of under-enforcing these types of rules would be threads so bogged down with pornography, racism, misogyny, and threats of violence that the forums would also be rendered useless.

The fact that we are somewhat comfortably between these two extremes is an indication that the moderators are generally doing things correctly.

I, too, am saddened by what happened, and those who left for other venues are missed here. Their interaction here with each other I always thought was a kind of catalyst that inspired others to research and write. I, also, have gone to another site where some of those who left here are now writing there but I see no reason to "resign" from my activities right here so, I read and write on both. Still, I wish all of us could be on the same site again There was a synergy there, hard to duplicate, with that bunch writing to each other on the same topic at the same time. By the way I use to read and write on an American Civil War site. I always tried to see matters from both sides but I discovered it was no longer possible to do that. I had to leave that site as the animosity being engendered there was too much to deal with. Fortunately no one here and on other numismatic sites really cares a whole lot about the rights and wrongs of the Peloponnesian or Punic wars. Thank the gods for that.

I'm on both sites as well. I have tried not to get dragged into any of the animosity or negative feelings in the past but I have seen on occasion how posts can veer off the beaten track and have the potential to be misinterpreted. Sometimes it's lost in translation (we have a global community after all, and English isn't everyone's first language - it wasn't mine either, initially). Other times it's one person baiting others, which I personally find difficult to understand. In the end though, I believe that we're all here for the love of the hobby, the advice and guidance from experts, and the learning that comes from others. That should be fun for the most part, rather than awkward.

I hear ya, but every locale has issues. Want to trade me FL hurricanes for MN -30 actual temps, (plus wind chill)?

I am looking around where to retire to, (doubt it will be MN if just for taxes), and am still unsure.
