I live about 10 miles from where John Sutter discovered the first gold that led to the California Gold Rush in 1849. I’ve been considering metal detecting because it seems fun but I’m just not sure if any of that gold is still left behind? If not gold what about coinage and other artifacts from the 49ers themselves?
There's plenty of gold in the American River you just have to know where to look, even in the Sacramento and surrounding areas there's still plenty of people detecting at the river for gold. I don't know much about it but here's a link with claim information, you don't need a claim to find gold either, you just gotta know where to look! https://www.idiggold2.com/
There is a lot of gold left in that river. If you get the gold bug please check the local laws first.
There's more gold as well silver in the US in general than has ever been found or mined! Fact...the cost to extract it from the areas which gold or silver are found,is so costly... that mining it cost more than its Current value. One would be surprised to know that all the total amount of gold world wide ...as in all gold mankind has...would only amount to 1 story of the base of the Washington monument. Thats a perfect cube 28 meters squared 28 m wide x 28 m tall .
I have friends and relatives in the Sacramento area that take weekends or day trips to look for gold. I'm not sure about how successful they are.
Good luck with your search for gold and let us know how it turns out. With the draught we now have in California the water levels are much lower possibly exposing more gold.
I left an extensive reply, but it did not post. Am pressed for time at the moment, so will just post this info~ I recommend checking out GPAA (Gold Prospectors Assoc. of America). They have large number of claim sites where members can prospect (detailed directory mailed to you (along with starter kit and monthly magazine). Check out their website for lots more info. Also, just to mention, a good metal detector I recommend is Fisher Gold Bug Pro- is lightweight; great for gold as well as coins and relic hunting; fast to learn. Overall, good detector at reasonable price ($5-$600). Hope this helps.
With gold/ silver prices on the dip are y’all buying more? I can’t find anyone that is selling lower than 20x to 19x even with melt being around 14x you would figure prices would go down to 18x but nope ….junk US silver holds!! No one will sell low when they bought in high, once the dollar becomes weak, than prices will move up.
My short time in this hobby I believe most dealers in bullion hedge and don't care what metals do but as a matter of fact if silver for instance goes down the premiums of silver items always had a tendency to go up. that's what I have gathered. plus I guess numismatic value!!! The mint still sells their eagles to distributors for around $3 over spot and yet the bid premium is over I believe 8 bucks.
The way the world economy is now, I would like to think that Silver holding around the twenty mark is pretty strong showing for the Silver.
My friend at work keeps showing me the phone video’s of people finding gobbs and hunks of gold not in rivers
