I have no idea why anyone serious about ancient coins would continue to actively participate in this forum. I absolutely agree that the best of the FB ancient coin forums are much more pleasant & viable venues these days; useful discussion without the arbitrary & heavy-handed pseudo-moderation that rules here.

I'll also note in passing that it seems Jyrki Muona, a good friend, super nice guy and recognized expert on the coinage of Otho & others, was unable to register to post here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/a-denarius-of-otho.396419/page-4#post-8343098. This is sadly typical. No doubt the anonymous Cointalk moderators had utterly compelling reasons to reject Jyrki's registration, since they have repeatedly & explicitly claimed to be infallible.

Feels great to read all the love and appreciation for FF:)
All his posts that I've ever read were positive, appreciative and appreciated.
It feels like most all would like a temporary banishment and then reinstating for a probationary period in this situation and probably most where it's a trusted long term member.

I hope you're checking up on us and read this FurryFrog. Your absence diminishes the board:singing:
Here's an, IMHO, stunning:wideyed: Celtic bronze to celebrate the fringe:

I'm not a gambler, but if I were, I would bet that Mr. Muona's inability to register was a technical issue, not an editorial decision.

I belong to both the Ancient Coins and the Ancient Coins Sales Facebook groups, and they don't permit discussions of politics or religion either. The big difference to me is that there, people rarely even attempt to break the rules or to bait others into doing so.

A nice suggestion to do is to put a banning period based on how high or low the violation or (violations) are in the rules.Hopefully The good old frog isn't permanent by what I know the average ban is within a week to two week period.Im not sure what his violation would rank but probably a little higher of a level than the average foul language. Not resulting in a permanent ban but to the least I'm not a mod nor can i read their minds!!!so...

I agree that any forum of discussion need to have rules, and if they’re not followed something has to be done. I just hope for a member here since 2012 it won’t be a life sentence. I absolutely have to add something to the comment of Mr. Davis. I love CT and for me it’s exactly the kind of place I feel good to talk and learn about coins. I’m also active on other forum which focus more about my area of collecting and in the last months I invited 2 friends to join CT; they are serious collectors, one with a PhD in numismatic… both of them were unable to create an account. They asked for my help so I’ve contacted the administration to ask if they could at least talk to them. They never received any answer to explain why they can’t become members… I wanna be clear: I’m not writing here to criticize for fun, no, I just want CT to SURVIVE ! To do so we need new members who’ll maybe become SUPPORTERS, but treating serious numismatist like mud is just making them run away. I beg you @GDJMSP read this thread and do something !

They can't create accounts but the guy who baited furryfrog somehow managed? Something's wrong about that.

That's the problem. The administration here uses a system they don't understand which often flags and bans new accounts. The actual trolls know how to avoid it. The administrators just don't understand the tech and why it mistakenly flags some accounts, and they believe it and themselves infallible so they won't even entertain the idea that a mistake could have been made.

He was a good reptile, I liked him. I can't say the same for his politics, but the same with him, as regards mine, I'm sure. But we keep that off the business, here, it's a wash, and we relate, in spite of it. And I think he thinks the same way of me, even when I'm a horse's ass, which, of course, as everyone knows, is very infrequent.

But I saw the thread. And the avatar, in so far as it being symbolic speech, just got him where it hurt. I didn't see the end, only that he was having a hard time letting go of it. So don't ask me what happened, IDK that. I wish it didn't, but it is what it is. And I wish we get him back, too, FWIW.

Here's a final thought. Isn't the reason we have the no-politics rule for exactly what just happened? Here's a normal frog--I mean, as far as frogs go--and, most of us liked him, and suddenly he goes off and blows his top. Moderators, are you paying attention to this? Why have the no-politics rule in the first place if you didn't understand this can happen to any one of us, here, at any time, going in? You knew it, that's why you have the rule. I'm not telling you what to do, but I think you should think a little. This rule is here to stop the instigators, not the reactors, and this avatar was, patently, symbolic political speech. Just give that some going-over.

I don’t have much to add, other than to say that FF is a great member of this community, and though I haven’t seen the posts at issue, I would hope that any consequences are limited and temporary.

I agree that there shouldn’t be any political discussion on the board, but I just think that permanently removing a good contributor to CT does much more damage to the site than whatever unfortunate political post he may have made.

A middle ground solution like a temporary suspension would seem to make much more sense here, and I’m hopeful that’s all this is. I think that permanent bans ought to be a last resort, especially when it comes to long-time members who have been positive contributors to the site.

I always enjoyed FF's posts. Didn't read the post(s) that was against the rules.

Just hope that his ban has a date of expiration, and is not permanent. Maybe we could bail him out somehow?

Very curious what the avatar was. In todays day and age, lots of hate speech gets to hide under the umbrella of “politics” and give people a pass for their horrid thoughts. If the avatar was hate, it shouldn’t matter if it’s under the umbrella of politics. It’s hate speech, and members shouldn’t be banned for calling people out on it.

Considering a certain flag of treason that one guy is permitted to continue to have as his avatar, I wouldn't hold your breath.

It wasn’t hate speech, just partisan.

But his tagline was the catch-word of a completely deranged and fundamentally anti-Semitic conspiracy theory.

Featuring a political figure, in fact. And, as Donna points out, that tagline.

“Thus, we consider this case against the background of a profound national commitment to the principle that debate on public issues should be uninhibited, robust, and wide-open, and that it may well include vehement, caustic, and sometimes unpleasantly sharp attacks on government and public officials. The no politics is a good call. There are now precious few places that remain politics free and I do prefer keeping them like they are even if that means a more heavy handed approach to moderating. I'm just speaking from my point of view but when I open this page to see what interesting stuff our colleagues have been up to, I'm surely glad I don't have to go through or around threads where people feel the need to be up in your face about their politics. Because usually when people do that, 99% of the time it translates into hate and vitriol. Now, if I'd wanna see that, I'd go to facebook or twitter or wherever people "discuss" the news. That being said and from what I understand the case was here, I wonder if there shouldn't be a diferentiation between the instigator to hate and vitriol and the one who calls the instigator out. Both guys do politics, but only one is blatantly in breach of the rules in their spirit.
