Ampex, you've got to be kidding me!

I would like to know where that is cause I have tried 3 dealers in my area and the cheapest one is selling for $22.00 (no tax) the others are $22.95 & $23.95 + tax.

Shop around indeed! Yesterday, a dealer here in NYC assured me that $6 over spot per ounce was a great rate for generic silver bars... oy! How does this guy stay in business? I think the only solution for those of us who don't have a local dealer is to save up and buy online once it becomes cost effective to pay the shipping charges.

 

That does sound like an idea. Get some people together that are close geographically and go in on a larger order together. In some of the more popular areas we could probably get some great prices...

I've shopped around on ebay until I found a seller charging reasonable shipping rates and or free/cents on the dollar shipping on each additional item. OR there are a few on there that will sell a couple ounces in the same auction and thus you can save on shipping.

 

All you guys that say buy local. The problem that I have. When silver dropped to $15 they still wanted $19.50 to $20.50 for s stinkin round. They were into the metal too high and weren't going to sell for a loss. I don't have the best answer, but I have liked Apmex, but I agree the s&h is high by my standards, but I haven't found anyone any better.

 

Personally, there really is no justification for a $12.95 shipping/handling fee. This company sells millions of dollars worth of coins regularly and the few who order small are easily offset by the bulk buyers. premium packing or not (tho appreciated) still does not justify this cost. It's not the way to get new customers on board either. I have seen most all delaers raising shipping costs recently and although postal service rates are always going up, most dealers are still useing the stickey flats to send their product. Getting my coins fast is appreciated but patience is also a virtue. Shipping at around $6.00 should be sufficient for most orders and should include insurance unless you are ordering a lot of rolls or similar. Shop around Amigo.

ASE are going for 23.95 +tax at our local coin shop, i said no thanks there excuse was the price they paid for them. So I ended up buying a MS64 1883 Morgan CC. Should of stayed home and watched the olympics.

 

If you don't want to by eagles, why not consider buying some 1 or 5 oz bars locally. They can be had for not too much over spot.

 

That is great advice, but where are these mythical local dealers? I mean the ones who aren't insane. I tried to buy bars locally last week: one dealer wanted $6 over spot for generic silver bars. The second one suggested I buy a 100 ounce silver bar because the premium would be "cheaper". But it was the exact same premium per ounce as his 1 ounce silver bars. The third one doesn't carry 1 ounce gold bars, only 10 ounces or higher. It becomes clearer and clearer why these online dealers are doing so well.

But I totally agree about buying bars (or rounds).

I just received my first 10 oz. silver bar. I did not expect it to be so small. The size reminded me of a bar of soap at a nice hotel.

 

Does it smell nice? Weigh it in your hand and you will feel better . The first time I felt more than 10 ounces of silver at a time, I couldn't believe it was so heavy. 100 ounces might make a very nice bookend.

 

Soap might have been a more practical purchase for your person, but you can't get clean rubbing yourself with a silver bar (need one of these for that) but you can clean the silver bar of its oxidation by rubbing it against your skin regularly.

 

Krispy: I checked out the stainless steel (soap like bar). That was pretty interesting. Not a bad idea. I wonder how it works on "skunk."

I will keep note in mind regarding cleaning a bar by rubbing on your skin.

A friend from Montana had a very dirty looking bar after storing it in the toilet tank for many years. He ended up using a grinder/buffer on it to clean off the black.
