Huh ? I said it was NOT POLITICS.... so I'm saying it isn't even an issue here. The markets are concerned with the Fed, inflation, and the new C-19 variant. That's it. Specifically, Chairman Powell basically said the Fed is "behind the curve" which is something we haven't had/seen since the 1970's. Today's reversal was wicked, let's see if the dipbuyers and Kathie Wood come in later this week.
Bingo. It's where politics intersects with the markets, not politics per se. For instance, if Biden had nominated Lael Brainard as Fed Chairman that would be something that would have really spooked the markets and criticizing the choice might be tough to avoid without touching on the political. If the mods don't want that, then it's their ballgame. We just have to live with it and talk about it somewhere else. Since Biden re-nominated Powell, the question is moot.
It's just impossible to separate the two 100 percent and have any actual conversation about the market
I did not mean to offend. These days with everything having to be so PC it's nearly impossible to know where the line might be drawn. I would even be hesitant to say I had caught the you know what and why I might have been absent for some time. I did not. Or if we are inquiring about someone else who has been absent for a while and they come back to find out they cannot share their thoughts about it. Crazy world out there.
Agreed...but richly priced and semiconductors can swing once supply and CAPX issues reverse. Personally, I'd look at CSCO and INTC on valuation and rebounds.
Heh. CSCO was one of the very first individual stocks I bought. I still have it, and it's worth almost three times what I paid -- after twenty years. I make that an annual return of around 5.3%. Not terrible, but the ADSK I bought at the same time has returned closer to 18%. It's up almost 30-fold, and that's after losing over 25% of its value from this year's peaks. Now, going forward, I like CSCO -- as you say, "valuation and rebounds".
CSCO had an insane valuation in 2000. It was selling at 80x P/E and no way it could grow into that. Ditto GE and many other (profitabl) tech stocks -- and forget about the non-profitable ones. It's trading at probably 16-18x earnings today.
I didn't hear much about the Market today, there was a gain in areas. But, didn't see where they ended. I hate to see the markets play into their hands. Could you imagine where the market could have been, in sky rocket digits. I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.
Oh good golly yes, it hit close to $80 a share early that year. Anybody who bought near the peak is still under water. I bought in May 2001, at just under $20 a share. It's been an exercise in patience, or more accurately bull-headedness.
Ya you are probably right from a finance standpoint - but simply from an engineering/tech view point they got a lock on this technology. I find it fascinating that their graphic chips have become as critical as CPU's (intel/amd) in the next generation of AI and Supercomputers. Exascale computing is going to be ground breaking - a 1000 times faster than the current supercomputers currently running. All coming on line in the next 1-2 years.
