Oh dear, I've done it again. Sorry I'm not myself tonight. Trying to watch the Yanks and Phillies and type here too. Still, maybe Aunty Hillary could help......

LOL! It's okay, maybe she will pass the note over to the Pres. for you.

Perhaps there are other people in CT that would help support the idea of trying to save the 2009 ASE and AGE proofs for the 23 year old collection.

What about starting a new thread? or have one in another area of CT. Not all people visit the bullion area, and perhaps we could get some support and help from another area.

Any ideas? I'm just not ready to give up on the idea of having the 2009s minted.

According to an editorial in Coin World by Beth Deisher (about this same topic), email is preferable to a paper letter sent through the post office. Because of concerns about terrorism, snail mail letters are screened carefully and this can add several weeks to the time before they are delivered to congressional offices. This late in the year, there might not even be time for a congressman or senator to respond.

All US Representatives and Senators have email addresses. You can easily find the email addresses on the house or senate web sites.

I recently wrote to Mr. Moy about a different issue (putting Teddy Roosevelt on the ABT quarters). He replied promptly and very courteously by email (his reply can be seen here) I believe it was a personal reply. However, the content of his reply was basically, that because some people in Congress have "had the opportunity to consider it" but didn't act on it, that the matter is settled.

I agree it would help if many of our congressional representatives heard from their constituents about it. I'm not sure that there's anything congress can do about the ASE situation, short of changing the law and they can't possibly do that in time to save the 2009 ASE. The mint's decision was based on their (misguided) interpretation of the existing law.

Which area can a new thread about this topic be placed on CT? Any suggestions?
Will it be considered 'political' and get closed?

Hey gang, I want a proof ASE just as much as the next guy.....maybe a bit more since the ASE has real sentimental value to me. This was the very first coin that I purchased back in 1986. Like most of you, I have every single one in this collection both proof and unc. But the ugly truth is, much to our discontent.... it is too late. There is no way that the mint is going to produce this coin with only two months left to go in the year. I can't recall something like this ever being done. In fact, I am quite surprised that we even got our buffs this year. I don't want to be a party pooper, but its time to move on. I call for a new thread....2010 Proof ASE!!!

As a side thought though.....based on a guest editorial in Coin World, I agree that the ASE series as we know it should end. I think that by skipping a year, the mint should start fresh and create a new ASE. This will be the topic of our new thread to get things started.

I checked out eBay a few days ago to see what the 2008-W AGB $50 proof had been selling for and could hardly believe it. What an investment! Between that and the Prosperity set I almost fall outta my chair! If I remember right, the ones sent off and slabbed a 70 made no difference, because people seemed to want them fresh like they came from the mint. Thanks for the info Elaine!

latest from numismatic news "coin market" february issue and the coin dealer newsletter january 22 issue. all 2006w to 2008w AGE uncirculated, 2008w AGB unc and proof, and all AGE proof posted upward again. that's mean collector's items don't always follow the price of spot gold movement. the collector's items go up and down based solely on their own supply and demand.

It's tempting to sell that 2008 Gold Proof Buff $50 for $3,500.00

But I'll probably just keep it, cause then I'd have a hole in my collection.

I guess it would match the hole we'll have the the 2009 $50 Gold Proof Eagle.
