Should i be adding these to my collection? they are rare i know, seem very cool and are with in my price range.
Some are rare, some are common, some are junk. You need to do quite a bit of work to avoid paying too much.
silver morgans? Should i be adding these to my collection? they are rare i know, seem very cool and are with in my price range. Indeed, as opposed to the non-silver variety that seems to be appearing on the scene as of late......
This is all true. It is a beautiful design with a lot of history. I also would suggest getting a book specifically on them before collecting. TC
If you think they are cool, then why not add them? Just be careful and do the homework before buying. But if you are thinking in terms of an investment, I don't know.
If you can find them for $18, as a silver investment, why not? As others said, make sure they are the silver kind. If you are looking at them bullion style, hold them on the tip of your finger and tap them lightly. You should hear a nice ring that lasts a few seconds. Make sure you don't drop them when doing this. They should weigh no less than 25 grams if they are in G or VG condition. The usual weight is 26.7 grams.
Very good point! If you plan on buying these for your collection, or investing, make sure you buy from a trustworthy source. Even the common dates are being counterfeited in China these days. Another series which is beautiful, and in my opinion undervalued is walker halves. Circulated common dates can be bought for slightly more than bullion value currently.
Maybe because the current melt value is about $12.50, and if you purchase the coins without really knowing what you are doing, a cleaned or damaged G or F graded coins is worth only a small premium to melt. So you may be overpaying by 40%.
I don't think it is going overboard to check silver prices before making a silver investment. The Redbook has a chart to determine the bullion value of coin denominations at various silver prices in the bullion section at the back of the book. My local coin dealer changes his prices accordingly when silver prices fluctuate rapidly, but some may not. That is when you may score good on 90% silver.
what isn't being counterfeited in china these days? it's sad that you almost have to have verification on common dates.
Iknow it. I am not an expert on detecting counterfeits, especially as they progressively get better. So the best I can do is trust that my trusted source for Morgans is on top of this, and an expert at spotting a fake.
Personally, I would avoid Morgans and stick to bullion coins like ASE, maple leafs, Philharmonics and bars and rounds from a well known private mint. It you want junk silver, you might try mercs, quarters, roosies, and franklins. Good luck.
Sometimes I think you just like to contradict me. If you can find a real Morgan dollar for $12.50, please tell me where. I'd like to buy some for that price.
I contradict what I believe is wrong, regardless of the source. But you missed the point. You probably won't be able to buy a morgan dollar for $12.50. However, if you take many of the morgans you purchase for $18 to a coin shop, you will find that the dealer won't give you much more than $12.50 for them. That's a much larger spread than with ASEs. But if you don't believe it, then be my guest and buy morgans. It isn't my intent to stop you or insult you, and I'll try to give you a free pass in the future to keep the peace.
Yes, but that is true with any silver or coins you buy for bullion. Sterling, .9999, or whatever. Agreed, the spread is more for Morgans, but if you like the coin and just want to have a few, $18 isn't a bad price. It isn't easy finding Morgans for less then $18, so I was just trying to give the original poster an idea of what he should be paying. It's a ball park price. But without an idea of what they are worth, maybe he would have gone out and purchased some for $24 and thought he was getting a deal. If he or anyone else can find Morgans for less than $18, I consider that a good deal. Sure, ASE have less of a premium, but it wasn't my point. I just wanted to give an idea of what one should be paying. I appreciate your wanting to keep the peace. We don't see eye to eye on many things. But the conversation and differing ideas do give me and others a varied perspective. So, I think that in itself is healthy. Peace.
Either way, I would choose a different coin other than the Morgan silver dollar to collect. More ppl collect Morgans than Carter has pills. just my 2 cnts.
