Any premium to be had on a 1908 motto ST Gaudens?

I figured with the 156k mintage?
It would be desired a bit more?

    Worth buying one ungraded?

Personally. No. With all the counterfeits out there it makes nervous spending that kind of money and finding it's not real . :nailbiting:

The motto is new to me in fact I thought all 1908's were without the motto. Whether it's worth more money, maybe to a holy roller! :D j/k Honestly, I have no idea!

Well, I am a holy roller I reckon and as far as aesthetics go, I prefer the no motto. I think it is a much cleaner coin. I like coins that aren’t too busy.

Surprisingly the 08 with motto is neck and neck in line with the 08 no motto until you get up in the 66-67 range where it takes a dramatic jump up…… Thing is with these, there really isn’t any way to know how many survived the melt that happened in 1933 so the lower mintage figures aren’t as much of a price driver as with other series.

    From a reliable dealer....with a return policy.....maybe.

    Otherwise, be careful. But the 1908 w/Motto isn't a high-target for counterfeits.

    It's still under $2000.
I'll probably just be a watcher, I've already helped the high bidder spend an extra $100.
    Reliable seller, not a dealer.
Their items as described by appraiser (cough cough) extra fine+
Bay seller, with bay return policy.
The missing left arm is a little troubling (the seller isn't the best photographer)

Then there is the question...is that a weak D that I see there where the mint mark would be? :wideyed:

I would try to make sure to buy from a reputable dealer anytime dealing with gold.. if possible a Round Table Dealer in regards to a coin of that caliper.

Yipe! That missing arm is worrisome. I think the "D" is pareidolia, based on my own extensive experience spotting "D"s on quarter eagles that don't actually have them.

All good advice from the bright bulbs on CT.
    The coin sold for $2476.
$25 shipping...hope the buyer didn't have to pay taxes, then add in shipping insurance costs and yeah too rich for me.
I was a player at $1800, but talked myself out of it rather quickly.

I popped into the local G&S store and asked if he sees them come in.
Nope, he could order one from his sources, but cash upfront and still looking at $2000 and up.

In MS-63, 1908 NM's are basically bullion subsitutes.

That's perfect for a type collector or someone on a tight budget looking for a good example that's mint state with no particular attributes.

The 08 with motto is one of those weird issues. Its much scarcer than no motto, yes, but no motto has a huge type coin demand the with motto doesn't. Its one of those that you will know is scarcer than the other variety but prices will never reflect that.

I agree. I believe just LIBERTY and the country should be the minimums. It was a Civil War thing that certain segments of society later latched onto. We should go back to what this country started with, obverse of Lady Liberty, Liberty, date, and United States of America. Simple statement of our desire for freedom for all.

There are several mottos on our coins and currency -- I kind of like them.

I’d ask myself why this coin hasn’t already been slabbed — and pass on buying it raw.
