So what is an "eclectic box"? It is a completely freestyle collection, abandoning the traditional structure of "sets" and allowing one to collect whatever catches one's fancy.

In my case, almost all the coins are third-party certified by PCGS or NGC (or eventually going to be), but beyond that, there aren't many rules. You'll likely still notice some subtle themes which reflect my personal tastes. The makeup of this collection does evolve and change periodically, as coins come and go.

The overall idea here is to build the nicest assortment of coins, tokens, and medals from all around the world, ancient to modern, that I can acquire on an intermediate, working-class budget. Eye appeal is paramount, but I'm also trying to add as wide a variety as possible of eras, cultures, and geographic regions here.

Notes for this update: Wow, it's been more than a year since I did one of these! The Eclectic Box, which was a fixed-quantity "Box of 20" collection from 2013 until mid-2016, is now very nearly a "Box of 100"!

In fact, I think I'm going to pause and go back to a fixed-quantity collection again for a while. This means I'll have to remove one coin every time I want to add a new one. It might stay “LordM’s Eclectic Hundred” for a while. It’s only metaphorically “The Eclectic Box” now anyway, since the coins are housed in three Lighthouse slab albums these days.

I need to focus on upgrades, and catch up on the writeups and reimaging. Sticking to a fixed-quantity set is challenging and takes some detachment, but I think I can do it for a year or two and then let the collection grow again... or not. At 100 pieces, I will have pretty much maxed out the available space in my safe deposit box.

Coins below are listed in chronological order. Photos are not shown to scale.

Whew! That was a bit of work, as you can imagine. But it has been more than a year since I did one of these, so... yeah.

I won't attempt to summarize everything that's come and gone in the past 13 months or so. I'm not sure I could even remember. There have been a few nice pieces that came and went in between these updates.

Next step is to fix some of the pictures you see here that have darkish slab labels. I shot those on my old Android phone in bad light. The coin photos are mostly professionally done- usually PCGS TrueViews- but I'm on my own for the slab shots and the coins that didn't come with TrueViews or good photos. I had to shoot the 1834 US quarter-eagle and 1855 gold dollar myself, as well as the 1924 Peace dollar, which gave me some agony and still doesn't look right. It's hard to photograph low-relief coins with really bright luster.

Anyway, I salute you if you've had the stamina to scroll this far down! Again, thanks for looking. :)

I love the way that 1853 quarter toned. That is a very enjoyable and unique presentation. It almost appears to be a copper coin.

99 here. Eleven pages of nine slabs each. I've got a John Adams Prezbuck in an ICG sample slab for Coin #100. Why? Well, I'm an Adams descendant, and the sample slab was something fun and different, and I think there were less than 100 of that particular type issued.

If there was a registry set for creativity, I think that collection would be at the top!
