Well I opened another box yesterday that has been packed for 5 years. As I was going through this box today, I found gold. It’s small but interesting. It’s Alaska Gold from 1909. And it’s marked by A.Y.P.E. This coin is from the Hart's Coins of the West series and was sold at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition held in Seattle in 1909. A nice example with problem-free fields. It’s 1 DWT or 1 Pennyweight. That is about 1.56 grams of gold. Not much but it is interesting.
Thanks. I bought it 5 years ago in an auction and at a good price. Never saw one until this one and I haven’t seen one since. I do like it.
Great looking Token and a great hidden treasure for you! Yes, many think that the Hart's made those Gold Tokens but they didn't, in fact I think they had passed onward by the 1900's but that's just a guess. The Hart's made a few Alaska Tokens but not that one. Julius L. Charbneau made those Tokens and many more that are true rarities and worth a lot of money today. Referenced from Jeff Shevlin's book, he's from my area and I bought his Golden Gate book, good book with a lot of pics! https://www.filmsgraded.com/mehart/index.htm
I’m not sure who made it but it’s from the Hart’s Coins of the West Series sold in Seattle in 1909 at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition.
You found gold and coincidentally I lost gold. Did that box have six sides? You can send it here. I know you'll do the right thing
Just passing information onward that's all. Jeff Shevlin even addressed the fact that many collectors think that the Hart's made that Token as noted below. Bottom right of pic one to under the box of pic two. And check out the below link! https://www.ebay.com/itm/255107304746?hash=item3b65948d2a:g:7AIAAOSwymFhJT6r
In the last 45 minutes I have done a little more research and over a hundred years later there is still a controversy about the Hart company.
I agree, what I've come across is different looking AYPE gold tokens! Makes me think maybe there's varieties or maybe Hart did make some, too long ago for sure but take a look at these pics. Notice that this one looks a bit different than yours and it's listed on a slab by NGC that includes Hart's etc. Oh and I realized something else, the Hart's company was still around until at least 1915, cause I have a PPIE token they made. Maybe someday someone will figure it all out!
I don’t know the entire story. From what I read I don’t think anyone else really knows either. There are different varieties and that’s easy to see in the Red Book.
Yeah, I'd love to own one but I'll wait until I can get a really nice one and until I learn more about them!
I didn’t even know I had this one as it was in a box that was sealed in 2016. I just opened the box the day I started this thread. I’ve found some other nice items to post but I’ve been to busy to do so. I’ll get them soon I hope.
I believe Roger Burdette's book on Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles mentions Alaskan gold. I'll check in coming days.
