Macedonia under Roman rule Tetradrachm

I really like the obverse design on this coin. It makes beautiful work of the large flan. But I also love the writing on the reverse.

All in all definitely a great coin in my opinion .

Yeah it’s beautiful!

Nah I don’t own it yet but I have a pretty high winning bid on it so I’m like 90% sure I’ll win it. I bid quite a bit more than previous sales of the same coin earlier this year.

I wonder if more elaborate designs made coins harder to counterfeit?

 

Fair enough. I won’t do it anymore. I’ve never done so but it was just such a cool coin I thought other people would like to see it since I know I love when people share cool coins.

I was just looking at my collection last night and spent some time with this one.

It had been a while.. not quite as well centred as your target but nice in hand and I’ve always liked the deep toning and contrast of this coin

I should really get around to re-photographing it

Does the obverse die shift bother you? It's an attractive type but that's a deal breaker for me as it's significantly disrupting the design.

 

Paid 250 Euro for mine, but that was 4 years ago.

 

Excellent choice if the die shift doesn't bother you . The type has been on my buy list for a long time but I never seem to find the right one at the right time at the right price.

Edited to add: oh... it's not yours yet. If I were to browse this auction later today and then decide to bid on it, that might look like I "stole" your target. Bad for both of us. Best not to discuss specific coins in upcoming auctions for this and many more reasons.

 

Agreed, those lips would bother me also. I'm surprised they didn't designate that or factor it into strike.

I much prefer the example that was in CNG 118. I bid on that one but didn't love it enough for the price.

This is an attractive type that's recently become a lot more popular. I recall this being a coin that was obtainable for < 500 about a year ago. Nowadays, if you're patient, one can be had in similar condition for about a 1000.

Note that at Heritage the serious buyers wait until the live auction or the very end to place their bids. My guess is this will go in the 2000-2500 range, though I don't think it's worth that.
