This era is great for coins, music, art, architecture.. baroque, with its ornate nature, should be revitalized in some way. this is Smolny Cathedral in St. Petersburg. This is Boston’s City hall. Which style would you rather have in your community?
Is baroque defined geographically as well as temporally? Does a Strasbourg 60 Kreuzer qualify? Ca. 1668
Awesome Baroque coins! @Marsyas Mike your 3 Kreuzer for just $4 that's a great deal! German States, Kingdom of Prussia, Friedrich II, ½ Friedrichs d'or: The Friedrich d'Or was minted from around 1750 until around 1855. Shortly before that period there also was a Friedrich-Wilhelm d'or , minted from 1737 until 1740 by Friedrich II’s father. Half Friedrichs d'Or traded for 2 ½ Thaler. It was issued in various styles 1749-86. The early issues are rare but the coin later came to be quite common and was imitated by other North German states as a five thaler gold coin. This ½ Friedrichs d'Or of 1751 shows four spikes on the reverse, usually there are three. 22 mm, 3.338 g Berlin, 1751 KM 939; Schr. 97; Olding 405 b 2; Kluge 49.2; Friedberg 2387 Ob: FRIDERICUS BORVSSORUM REX Friedrich II facing right with cross and collar, Rv.: Crowned eagle over military trophies four spikes on each side, 1751 A A Brandenburg-Preußen, Kingdom of Prussia, Reichstaler also from the same Fridericus Breslau (Today Wroclaw, Poland), 1751 38 mm, 21.87 g Olding 28 b; v. AUSTRIA-HUNGARY Leopold I Taler 1696 Prague mint Switzerland BASEL Quarter Taler n.d. (after 1700) Spanish Netherlands BRABANT Albert & Isabelle 2 Ducatons 1618
Yes, yes, architecture too! Excellent point. It really was the Age of Enlightenment in so many ways. I dunno, but that looks 100% Baroque to me. Nice.
@talerman - that Basel quarter-taler is remarkable! Y’all reminded me I too have a Hogmouth, though just a minor denomination.
Prince-Bishopric of Liège, Liard, 1650-1688, Copper I do like this time period a lot. I mostly collect coppers and minor silvers which tend to be not quite as ornate as the larger silvers. They usually saw a lot of circulation, so they are often quite worn, and sometimes weakly struck.
Cutting grass himself to not have to pay someone else to mow, of course. If he paid someone to do it, perhaps two or three of these coins would never have made it into his possession
I think it’s a basilisk (Basel- basilisk), but yeah, they rendered it in a very dragonesque manner. It’s a mythical beastie that underwent much different interpretation over the centuries.
