I recently purchased several Morgan’s and this one was among the purchase. I have tried to find information on it, but can’t find what I am looking for. The lines by the eye and back of the head are raised so it makes me think it’s a die break, but I don’t know and the missing 1 in the date is strange. You can see that the 1 is slightly raised but not like the other numbers. Any, help about this coin would be greatly appreciated!
All PMD IMO. Someone deliberately put scratches in the coin long ago. Use a tooth pick to see if they are incused. If they are, then PMD. I've never seen die cracks anywhere close to what that is. The 1 in the date took a hit, so again PMD. Welcome to CT BTW. Not any relation to Gary from Sacramento, are you? Old High School friend of mine.
First, welcome to the neighborhood, Vickie! PMD is "post-mint damage". Those marks are not merely scratches. They are severe gouges with coin metal pushed out along the edge. FYI, die cracks are not usually attributed as errors on Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars. More often, they are used to determine die state. You can learn more about this on VAMWorld where all Morgan and Peace Dollar varieties are identified.
It's similar to the "crater effect" when a meteorite strikes the earth. The recessed area is the gouge, and the raised area is the coin metal pushed up and out of it.
