I don't mind which day. I was just looking back through the amcc 1/2 results and it's crazy looking back how cheap some stuff sold for and the lots that didn't sell even with low start prices.
Good to hear that AMCC 3 is going to happen soon. I can't wait to see the catalogue! At the same time, I'm sorry to hear that it will probably be the last auction for a while. I remember that you mentioned the possibility of continuing AMCC in another format a while ago. Is this still the plan? Here is another favorite win from AMCC 2: Roman Republic, anonymous issue, AR denarius, 179–170 BC, Rome mint. Obv: Helmeted head of Roma, r.; behind, denominational mark X. Rev: Luna in biga r., with horses prancing; in exergue, ROMA (traces of overstriking?). 20mm, 3.80g. Ref: RRC 158/1. Ex JB collection; ex AMCC 2, lot 93.
No plan at the moment... we'll see where my thoughts settle! But it won't go away entirely, certainly.
Really looking forward to the auction Thomas! I hope I can get some nice pieces. Since I live in Europe I would prefer a Saterday, as the auction starts for me in the evening and it is less convenient on Sunday evening when the workweek starts again.
Just in time for HST! Good timing, Severus! I’m in the process of moving, but, will be done by then. Can’t wait for the Pick Bins! Erin
This time I will be seeding the Pick Bins with a dozen or so rare & special coins that really shouldn't be there. (My own coins, not consignors'!) For more fun! Of course there will probably be some rarities there by accident too.
@Severus Alexander I can't wait for this auction! The fact that shipping is from Canada makes it something I can't even dream of missing . Here's my favorite coin, and my most beloved win from AMCC 1: Diocletian AE Follis 296 A.D., London Mint, null Officina 9.06g, 28.0mm, 6H Obverse: IMP C DIOCLETIANVS P F AVG, Laureate, truncated, bare neck bust right Reverse: GENIO POPV–LI ROMANI, Genius standing, facing left, head surmounted by a modius, naked except for chlamys over left shoulder, holding patera in right hand and cornucopia in left arm Exergue: -/-//LON Provenance: Ex. Ancient & Medieval Coins Canada Auction 1, Lot 128, Ex. James Pickering Romano-Britannic Collection Reference: RIC VI Londinium 1a, Cloke & Toone 1.01.001 (R)
That is one of my favourites I've ever sold, @Caesar_Augustus! When you post it you may want to include our later discovery (with the help of Hugh Cloke) that it's ex Lockett. Hard to get a better provenance than that! Such a great coin.
Looking forward to AMCC3! Here's a fond memory from AMCC1: Bidder #1 placed bid #1 in AMCC auction #1, lot #1, and on December 1, won. (I was the first bidder registered by AMCC ) Hilariously, @zumbly is bidder #2 and in that same auction, Bidder #2 won lot #2 on December 2 (his time zone is half a day ahead).
Good to meet a fellow Canuck! There are a surprising number of us here. You can sign up here: https://www.biddr.com/auctions/amcoinscanada/ . I think you just click on "are you already an approved bidder..."
Fun times! Here's the coin in question: CAMPANIA, Neapolis AR Didrachm. 7.1g, 19.5mm. CAMPANIA, Neapolis, circa 290-270 BC. SNG ANS 385; SNG Cop 444; HN Italy 586. O: Diademed head of the siren Parthenope left; in right field, B and M below. R: Man-faced bull standing right, crowned by flying Nike; E below, [NEOPOLITWN] in exergue. Ex Tiberius Collection Lesser known fact: as Bidder #2, I also won Lot #2 in AMCC Auction #2 : CIMMERIAN BOSPORUS, Pantikapaion AE22. 7.61g, 21.7mm. CIMMERIAN BOSPORUS, Pantikapaion, circa 310-303 BC. Anokhin 1023; MacDonald 69; HGC 7, 113. O: Bearded head of Satyr (or Pan), right. R: Π-A-N, forepart of griffin left, sturgeon left below. I am both happy and sad to see AMCC3 finally ready to launch because I know I’ll miss these epic CT events. I like knowing without a doubt that @Severus Alexander is honest and trustworthy and his interest in starting AMCC was rooted in a love for ancient numismatics and a desire to provide a trustworthy Canadian venue and not just a desire to make money for its own sake (not that there is anything wrong with making money!). With all the new fly-by-night auction houses that burn through auctions so quickly they can’t possibly vet all the coins, AMCC is a refreshing change of pace that is much more my speed. AMCC has been fun and I look forward to being a part of this (possibly) last auction. Perhaps I am reading too much into it but it seems that the added stress of running an auction house as a side job might start to interfere with the escapist enjoyment of collecting. I’ve not interacted with SA near as much since the start of the auctions so if the end of AMCC as a yearly auction means more time for SA to hang out here then there will be at least one upside. Cheers, happy collecting and remember that all the AMCC Nerva-Antonines are no good... no good at all (mine mine mine mine mine) Here are a few AMCC wins I haven’t shown on this thread yet.
Wow, Curtisimo, that is a great heartfelt message. I agree, we want more SA Those are some nice pictures too! Brings out the best in those lovely coins. I feel this AMCC 3 will be quite a wonderful event for all of us and one that we'll remember for many years.
I was planning to go to York coin fair in July since they are back on for me but what's the point when I can snag some nice coins in AMCC with provence from friends. I think since last year I must have messaged @Severus Alexander a few times asking when the next auction is coming the only auction I actually look forward to.
Aww... thanks for the kind words, guys! AMCC has definitely been a labour of love for me, but @Curtisimo is right, it has also taken away from other kinds of coin time, including CoinTalk time. I do really enjoy running the auctions, though, and I like to think I'm providing a valuable service to CT members. (Surely more valuable than the posts the work has displaced, at any rate!) Plus I've learned a lot from handling such a variety of coins that I wouldn't have had a chance to otherwise. Considering just these tradeoffs, things could actually work out in AMCC's favour! Except for one thing: the number of hours in a day. What prevents me from continuing with regular auctions is really just the sheer amount of time involved. ID'ing, writing up (properly), and photographing 500+ coins plus the extra work involved in systematically organizing them, dealing with the biddr system, acquiring consignments, communicating with consignors & buyers, and mailing, is pretty massive. My life is simply too packed with other things for me to take the auctions on as a regular thing, even only once a year. (My wife used to be able to help out more, but now she has her own small business to look after.) In addition, this problem has caused unavoidable delays, which have made my consignors have to wait far too long... which is unacceptable to me. When I started this thing, I didn't truly appreciate the time (and energy) it would take. Rose-coloured glasses and all that. If I can figure out a way to resume, I will. (Maybe Amazon will start carrying extra hours to add to your day, or something!) Meanwhile I'd better get back to work on the photography I have to do today! Once the auction's all wrapped up I have no doubt I'll be spending more time on CT. You may regret encouraging me!
Additional comment: part of the time problem is me. I'm constitutionally incapable of ignoring the urge to research an interesting coin, even if it's only worth 20 bucks. I'm not saying I spend an hour on each coin, but we all know there are lots of interesting coins out there, and almost every coin can become interesting if you start thinking about it... I should post an interesting coin. Why is this one interesting? (It's really interesting - mine though. ) (@Claudius_Gothicus, you are disqualified from answering. )
