Hi Folks, gold Indians are no easy target for grading. What do you think about this piece? What should it grade at? Every opinion is welcome Thanks.
One of the most difficult coins to grade, IMO and it is beautiful, again, IMO. I think this coin should grade ~ MS-63+/64, but wouldn't be surprised at 65. I look at coins graded by PCGS and am surprised when I see the grade vs the photo vs their grading guide. I understand three graders are used and consensus wins unless one is unsure of a grade, then a fourth is used to determine final grade.
I like the luster, but see a fair number of short lines running 10:00 to 4:00 on the reverse. I’m not sure it won’t grade, but I’m pretty sure it won’t qualify for 63 as a result.
You have to grade these by the luster and the upper left quadrant of the reverse. You have an easy MS62. I agree with others that this is a tough series to grade. Try your hand at a 1908, which has very little reverse feather detail as struck. Before I knew that information, I bought one raw as a “VF35” and it came back from NGC as AU58!
