Philly coin shop discovers possible 1922 high relief matte proof peace dollar, thoughts?

Diagnostics do look good on this one - but without authentication, definite pass. Some other explanation is still more likely than discovery of the (11th I believe?) in existence.

By the same token, it could be taking longer because PCGS is probably scrutinizing the sh*t out of it before any authentication announcement. Who knows - the guy hasn’t provided an update it’s been 33 days. Living in Philly, all I know is I wish I had stumbled upon it

Using the lordmarcovan photo for comparison, most of these check out from what I can see thus far in the example photo. I believe the coin is genuine in every aspect...not a fake, not altered, etc. As to whether it's what they claim remains a ?

 

The break at the corner of E on the ray that goes through O bothers me, just something I noticed. How would somebody counterfeit one of these with the correct markers without having a real one?

This just goes to show you that you CAN'T spend only 30 seconds (or less) on a coin.

This baby is requiring hours or days by any TPG, I bet.

 

It is not a high relief ‘22, as it has only 6 rays between the rock and tail feathers. Also has 11 rays from the back, not 12. Just an ordinary 1922, strong strike. That automatically disqualifies it.

 

Might want to check with your accounting department. Looking at the coin in the OP.

 

You might want to check the coin altogether. It is faked.

As expected! Congrats! Not sure what "prooflike" would mean for this coin. They didn't have reflective fields to start with. That doesn't really matter, though. There are a couple other HR business strikes known for this one, and this will join them in the Big Bucks club.

Cool. I revisited my two 1921 dollars that I thought I remembered looking very similar, and indeed they do...they're just a tad better in terms of conditions but with the same antique sort of surfaces/appearances. If the (new) owner wants a 1921 to match and compliment his now-rare '22 extraordinaire...send them my way...!

All of the diagnostics involving rays fail the test.

Someone should put up a pic of a real one next to the "found" one.

As of now, for my money, it's a resounding NO !

EDIT : I do believe I was looking at Rob's coin when I was counting the rays.
After looking at the correct coin, I do believe I shall change that resounding NO to a very meek and embarrassed yes.

The coin is back from NGC. J-2020, graded AU-50.

 

Apparently the pattern J-2020 is “medium relief”, not high relief - ultra rare (I think ~6 have been found to exist?), and possibly worth more, lol - more on the pattern:
