Philly coin shop discovers possible 1922 high relief matte proof peace dollar, thoughts?

Discovered sifting through culls. The pictures are low resolution, but the diagnostics look promising and it's been checked out by other LCS guys in the area. Wondering if you can guys have thoughts. See the images below:

I am a skeptic when it comes to these finds. It would be neat to see them authenticate it as real, that sure gives many of us cherry pickers good vibes. The coin in question looks like it has been altered to me, But hey those are some crappy pics to be trying to authenticate from.

 

It looks like a normal 1922 peace dollar to me but sometimes the impossible is possible.

 

Please take it out of the holder and take new pictures.

I am not an expert on this type, but it looks to me like an improper cleaning... If it is a proof, it has had a remarkably hard life for what would have been a 'special' coin even in it's day...

 

The ray that extends over the N in ONE makes me cautiously optimistic, but I suppose that our friends in China could probably fake that. Whatever it is, I don’t think it’s a normal 1922 peace dollar (it’s either a fake or something special).

 

Did they figure out what the coin is ?

 

He's had the redit on it for over a month now. My guess, clout chasing with a story at this point.

I'll save my judgement but I'd think if it was legit the grading company would have got it by now and announced the major find of the century.

 

Yeah nothing so far. I DMed the guy but he didn’t respond yet. I’m not going to make any assumptions yet - if it’s not legit I’m interested in what it comes back as though.

 

To me, it looks like a well-struck ordinary Peace Dollar. It was early in die life, so a really strong strike is entirely possible. I don’t see it as high relief—it looks nothing like the 1921, to my eye. An impaired proof is far more unlikely than a high relief 1922. I think it is a circulation strike.

The OP coin looks like one of the high relief 1922s. It is not an ordinary 1922 Peace dollar. Send it for authentication.

 

The neck line seems to pierce through the nine? I'll hold my opinion for now and wait for our more experienced Ct'ers to offer theirs. Good luck

 

Diagnostics for the 1922 high relief coins include:
- Fatter lettering of IGWT with the top of the O level and G high.
- More rotund 9 and curvier bases of the 2s
- Different hair detail
- Different olive branch configuration
- Three rays below ONE on the reverse excluding the one through the N
- Long ray through the N of ONE
- 12 rays from the eagle's back rather than 11
- 8 rays between the rock and tailfeathers rather than 6

 

I guess after really looking at things, this one looks good at face value, but the R in TRUST really bothers me. it's like a P with a extra long leg added. the neck base going through the 9 further than it should bothers me, the date being that close to the rim..... I just don't know here.... If I were a buyer for something like this, I'd have to pass I think, not that I'm a buyer. LOL
