One of the things I resolved to do this year was keep up with photographing, researching and completing write ups for all my coin purchases. I started out the year doing pretty well in this regard but I’ve since fallen behind on photos and write ups for some really nice coins I’ve acquired recently. Overall I’d have to give myself a Q1 grade of C+ (don’t forget the plus!). Even with my uneven effort over the first three months of the year I’ve managed to put together some decent research and write ups so I figured I’d re-share them here on this last day of Q1. An Ancient Coin Showing Homer A Couple of Fine Style Sestertii Themistokles: The First Portrait Coin in History or a Very Drunk Blacksmith? When Hope is a Bad Thing - Elpis and Pandora’s “Box” Please post coins and links to your write ups from the first 3 months of 2021. I will make a guarantee that for everyone who takes the time to post a link to your write up I will take the time to thoroughly read the thread beginning to end! I often miss good threads because they drop off the front page sooner than I see them. Let’s fix that!
Curtis, Nice pickups, especially the Faustina sestertius ! The effort & work you put into "Guess the Coin Talker 2021" should kick up your grade to A+. So stop acting so modest .
Awesome pictures! I'm trying to work on my photography skills but I've got a looooonnngg way to go before I can get even close to yours
This thread highlights one of the main problems of this forum (and the only reason that this problem exists is that this forum is full of active and knowledgeable collectors, so it is a compliment really). Many members do wonderful write-ups for wonderful coins that are full of useful info, but they soon end up way back in the thread history never to be seen again. I wish there was some kind of nicely categorised index where one could find all these articles. The featured option is quite useful and helps a lot, but not all great threads get nominated to be featured and it still is a list of threads that is many pages long. Perhaps there could be some kind of a pinned thread containing just links to great write-ups nicely categorised according to civilisation/ruler etc. What do you think? As for my own write-ups for this year, I have realised that I haven't done many. Work has picked up and I am quite busy lately, so even though I bought many coins I didn't spend much time researching them in order to give them a nice presentation. Here are the ones that I have written more than a paragraph or two about, but none really compare to some of the wonderful write-ups I have seen in this forum. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/the-last-of-the-great-seleukids.373812/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/fr...ia-to-the-highlights-of-my-collection.374506/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/they-called-him-the-besieger.375060/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/the-eunuch-who-ate-all-the-pies.376902/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/the-empire-strikes-back-nicaea-hyperpyron.377584/
I am far behind in posting my coins, the only full threads for new coins I've started for 2021 were for this early Parthian bronze: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/early-parthian-bronze-coin-of-phriapatios.374212/ And these two bronze Parthian drachms, whose mysterious origins I probe: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/two-parthian-ae-drachms-why-do-these-exist.375686/
I didn't do many good writeups, certainly not compared to 2020. I give myself a D-. Restitutor Coins: Nothing really special here, but spurred a large number of post replies. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/restitutor-coins.373789/ Xtra Long Xergues: Again nothing special, but produced some really wonderful examples from Doug's collection. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/xtra-long-xergues.373788/ I hope to do some legitimate writeups sometime soon.
I don't know what curve you're grading on, but with beautiful coins from amazingly pivotal times and write ups (and cointests!) With all you've done to put up such a stellar start O the year, a triple A+ is in order: I've had a fast start myself! Here's a couple newbies https://www.cointalk.com/threads/do...est-these-buns-isis-cans.374033/#post-5483030 https://www.cointalk.com/threads/th...ut-is-it-the-worlds-best.374740/#post-6229160 https://www.cointalk.com/threads/so...ia-and-grandpa-to-brutus.377279/#post-6897247 And one I've not shared that I just got in hand. A crazy popular and sought after Macedonian shield beauty... MACEDON. Heraclea Sintica. Ae (Circa AD 100-150). Obv: ΗΡΑΚΛΕΩTΩN. Ornamented Macedonian shield. Rev: ΕΠΙ ϹΤΡΥΜΟΝΙ. Club. It seems we forgot that it is not only the moderators' job to feature threads. Any members can suggest it by clicking on the Report word at the end of the OP you think deserved it. I just did so this afternoon for an excellent write-up by our friend @ycon . It reminds me what Warren (@Valentinian ) did on his own website with CT's threads. Maybe someone more courageous than me could try to do something similar ??? http://augustuscoins.com/ed/threads2.html
Is there a way to search just for threads you've started, as opposed to ones in which you left comments?
Many times when I log in, it brings up a page with several interesting and well researched threads. I always take time to read the most current ones. I click the "Like" button always.
Here are links to nine threads I started this year, with write-ups and photos of 10 new coins I bought. Some of the write-ups are longer than others (mostly of the new Roman Republican coins), but the longest is probably the write-up below of a Roman Alexandrian Nomes obol of Hadrian. I know I can be long-winded, but for anyone who hasn't read these before and wants to take a look, I hope there's something in them, and/or in the discussions that followed, to keep your interest. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/fi...21-roman-republican-denarii-nos-43-44.372929/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/provincial-coin-of-domitia-and-domitian.373177/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/ne...-coin-with-traditional-egyptian-theme.373239/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/another-tyche-orontes-provincial-from-antioch.373467/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/griffins-as-representations-of-nemesis.374292/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/roman-republican-denarius-45.374815/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/roman-republican-denarius-46-desultor.375241/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/roman-republican-denarius-47-another-elephant-48.376325/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/isis-and-the-infant-horus-harpocrates-two-new-acquisitions.377294/ (The second new acquisition pictured described in this thread was an ancient artifact -- a faience amulet of Isis and the infant Horus.) Four more links to 2021 threads with write-ups of new coins to follow.
Four more 2021 threads, with write-ups of seven new coins, for a total of 17 new write-ups this year, eight of them about Roman Republican coins. I actually have three more new Roman Republican coins to write up, but only one has arrived and I plan to wait and post all three together. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/roman-republican-denarii-nos-48-49.376842/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/roman-republican-denarius-no-50-c-calpurnius-piso-l-f-frugi.377452/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/two-new-roman-provincials-impulse-purchases.377722/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/tw...ation-unlisted-in-ric-maximinus-thrax.377844/
