Aha, coughing and sneezing, etc. I think that's an excellant point! It should be more like a hospital surgical room at the mint. There is no telling how may coins that have had specs of it land on our coins, and over time, the bacteria will graow and will expand to create those ugly black spots. Perhaps I am just too picky. I don't even like the fact that the grading companies handle coins with their bare hands, because although they just touch the sdge, that matter can grow around the edge and get on the face of the coin. Besides, the edge of the coins is also part of the grading. Many coins don't make 70s because the rims or edges have flaws, yet they still handle them with bare hands.
I think we have probably all noticed the small flocking hairs that are associated with the presentation case somehow drawn to the plastic or even inside the capsules. I niticed them mostly on the older style cases like the little blue booklike case that comes with the AGE in the past.
I know PCGS is considered #1 in grading. Is it possible that the reason NGC is considered #2 because they don't pay as much attention to the edge of the coins?

A few years ago I did send a few coins to ICG and had them graded. Personally, at that time, I considered them to run neck and neck with PCGS. Around 2005, they stole many top people from PCGS and NGC to help them build the company, and I think they did a good job. At that time I wondered if they would surpass PCGS, but it never quite happened. Back then I went through several of my albums and pulled several keys, like my 1921 & 1928 Peace, 1909-svdb, 1914-D, 1909-S Lincolns. I even baited them with a few other cleaned slider coins, but they caught, bagged and tagged every one of those.

Guess I'll get off my soapbox before this becomes a book.

Thanks,
Chuck

Interesting...now on the order screen is says available 11/20 from 12/3. I wonder if the orders are slowing down (and I am surprised it changed on a Saturday).

In this thread I've seen some of the best pictures of beautiful coins. How do you do it? Do you use a light box? How do you crop the picture to just show the coin? Care to share your techniques?

BTW, this is a very educational thread for me.

Thanks

It wouldn't surprise me to see it shoot up drastically.

I'll bet there are a lot of people that get their Buffalo in the next few days. I sure would love to see some hard numbers on the quantity sold and quantity shipped.

so they were caught before shipping out? wonder if they'll be melted down?
convenient way to suddenly run out of supply, maybe.
and what's this going to do to elaines mintage estimates :rolling:

I'm glad you said something about this, because when I received my box, it had been opened. That's why I quickly got out my scope and inspected it to the finest detail. I looked at it just after opening up the box, and very carefully opened the mint box as well. The mint box did not appear to have been opened, just the outer box.
Anyway, as I stated before, my Buffalo was perfect, but I was still wondering why the outer box got opened and re-taped. I even took a picture of it before opening it.

Thanks Chief!

On my previous post you can see where the outer covering of the cardboard was ripped off with the original tape.
Here is the top of the box, which was fine. You can only see part of the re-taping at the top.

Evidently they had many all boxed up and ready to go, even had shipping labels on them when somebody found the problem and they ripped open boxes and replaced it with a problem free Buffalo.

I wonder how many others had this happen.

If gold continue its upward pace to pass over $1,100.00 an ounce. And the average london gold price is between $1,100.00 to $1,149.99 per ounce. Then the mint gold prices will be as ff:

2009 uhr double eagle - $1,489.00
2009w american buffalo gold proof - $1,410.00
2009 spouse's gold proof - $729.00
2009 spouse's gold unc - $716.00

This is the week gang! I am breaking down.....Sorry Krispy.....I am going to buy it. With as volitale as the market has been, I can't take the chance on missing this opportunity to buy this coin. The FS coins on the otherhand can wait. We have nearly a year to make up our minds on those.

That's cool, hope you get a great one too! I think this will be interesting to watch. I'm still waiting to buy. I'm resolved not to stress over it if gold price stays up while the proof AGBs are still available from the Mint or if I miss out on them at this time should they "sell out".

I am not a particularly 'lucky' person....but I recall back to the Hunt Brothers event. Being a young man, I didn't have much $$ but I had been able to buy a Rand for $150 at a coin show a year or so earlier. I finally decided that at $820, it was time to not get (any) greedier. The next day, the bottom fell out.

I am starting to "feel" like maybe its time to take some silver off the table. I think (unless some one has some different views) its been brought along by Gold and other commodities but doesn't have the staying power as a store of value. I am thinking about dumping all of my junk silver and just keep the Morgans and Peace dollars.

I don't want to be a 'pig'...and I can't explain a rational reason for this 'bubble'. Bubbles can be lucrative until they pop.

Good luck to you Otter! A person has to do what they think is best.
I can't always explain my gut feelings on commodities or stocks, but somehow they almost always turn out in my favor. Maybe I'm just lucky. Right now I feel like the precious metal ride has just begun, and I am looking forward to it. There is no way that I could bring myself to sell my gold, silver, or copper at this time! Just my gut feeling I guess.

Good luck to you!
Chuck
