Eric, The Newbie, For the last 3 months I've been able to buy from the Mint their beautiful 2009 UltraHigh Releif Double Eagle Gold coin. From what I see not all are 70 graded. I had intended to purchase my 2 remaining monthly coins from the mint but realized I might be better of buying a graded 70 from one of the dealers. What would You suggest and if a dealer is the way to go, which one?
Depends what its worth to you.... and how well you know coins. if you can spot an ms70 then just order one from the mint, if its not what you want return it till you get a ms70. that may be 75$ in shipping MAX back and forth a few times, then an extra 50 for the grade from pcgs or NGC but you will still end up paying less. Or if you dont care/ dont have the time just buy on off ebay... seen em going for not much more than 1600 or 1700
Thank You for Your semingly expert advice. Since theres only 2 more months, I'll probobly pick them up from the mint and sit on them. I'm a post-stroke former trial Attorney who has roughly $1500/mo to invest for ten years when my disability ends. Ive purchased the finest high end lugers and beleive Gold is my safest and best. My question is what form. I'm sure theres other in simular situations. My old German Grandmother told be "As long as you have Gold, you will always have bread". She left me her 1882 Gold Eagle and I've never gone hungry.
With $18,000 a year just to spend on gold, you might want to read up on pre-1933 gold. Save up a couple months and buy something rare. Start a nice MS-63+ collection of Saint's or maybe a set of Type II Liberty Double Eagles. There is a lot of gold out there that will appreciate more quickly than buying up common gold bullion like the UHR's. If you have to pull the trigger on the $3,000 right quick and want a modern no brainer ...look into the American Gold Eagle Reverse Proof from 2006. Slabbed they run about $3,000 give or take.
Thank You both so much> Up till now I purchased rare high end luger such as this 1920 9mm Luger Carbine the same was owned by Teddy Roosevelt and the Kaiser. I bought mine directly from Ralph Shattuck an author and the owner of the rarest and finest collection. I paid $9k when regular high end lugers were $1000- $2,000 at best. I've been recently offered $18,000. Yes I'm taking both your advice. I'll buy a ms70 buffelo and work on the higher end, even if I have to save up a month or two.
Be careful about taking advice off the Internet. While everyone has an opinion and believes they are right (most of the time) you need to read up and grow your own knowlege base if you are going to throw down that much money for your hobby/investment. Get a few reference books like the "Red Book" and I like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Experts-Guide...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1257359072&sr=1-1 While you are saving for a couple months, do your research, learn about the different coin series and most importantly learn to grade. Sometimes slab labels tell lies and a lot more goes into determining value than MSXX and PFXX. Learn about eye appeal. A lower graded coin with eye appeal can sometimes out price a higher graded coin with a dull flat appearance. In time you will find a niche where your collecting/investing interests lay.
BEAUTIFUL GUN! I wish I had a simple luger. As far as the buffalo I would snag a proof, either that or a W Ms70. The bullion coins wont go up as much (imho)
I want to thank You all. Before my stroke of fate in Jaco Beach, Costa Rico, I was a Trial Attorney for 25 years plus. Like you stated, try to get as many opinions from a most diverse base. And I agree a coin with eye appeal catches more fish and easier to sell when the time comes. I ordered the book that was suggested. Old Lawyers love books. If anyone cares to write or needs some Legal direction in exchange for coin advice, just drop an email to Eric, Esq. 'snookem13@aol.com'
A Note Found While In Villanova Law School During my second year my Law School roommate found this Conneticut note in an old book while doing reseach for moot court. I bought it from him for twenty bucks. I;ve been unable to find out anything or if I got Ripped off!
I'm sorry as I'm new to this addiction and I've ordered the experts' Guide. What are they referring to as a "slab or slabbed". I know its important as I've seen it referred elsewhere!
Third party graders like NGC and PCGS ..place the coin in a plastic case. The case is called a slab. It's tamper proof and should, in theory, keep the coin in its current state of preservation. While grading is subjective and no two people will agree even when grading the same coin at times. Third party graders or TPGs make the call on the grade and their grade is generally accepted when making transactions. Thank You Andrew That makes sence.Does the fact that a individual coin is in a 'slab' makes it more valuable. I now bought 3 2009 Ulta High Relief and was going to purchase one in a few days when my disability comes in and a final one next month, is this a mistake as I don't know what I'm purchaseing??
Can a normal human being tell the difference between a MS 69 and MS 70 on their multible 2009 Ultra High Releif Double Eagle Gold Coin?
It's extemely difficult to tell the difference between a '69 and a '70. If you can live without all the '70 hype you can save quite a few bucks by purchasing a '69. 'specially when it comes to modern bullion..... I'll also add my opinion that it's really not worth it to purchase modern bullion items in slabs as I feel the cost is prohibative. Purchasing directly from the mint (in most cases) will net you a '69 or '70.
First, Thank You for your input. One does look better, although I think I'm loosing my mind. Debbie my wife came with the opposite choice. Go Figure!!
Does the fact that a individual coin is in a 'slab' makes it more valuable. When I'm buying old gold (pre-1933), I ONLY buy slabbed coins but not because they are more valuable but because they are authenticated and I am not skilled enough to spot fake coins in all of the series that I want to collect. So for peace of mind, I only buy slabbed coins. Personally, I don't buy modern coins slabbed. I'm not a 70 chaser. I was going to purchase a 4th and 5th UHR when my disability comes in, is this a mistake as I don't know what I'm purchaseing? Who is to say what is a mistake. If you like the coin and want 5 of them ..it's not a mistake. You should know that are not really rare. There are close to, if not over 100,000 minted to date. Over time, they might be considered bullion and fluctuate with the spot price. It could be a fad coin. I even saw a full page ad for one in Vogue or Art News. A funny place for a gold coin ad, I thought. I have one UHR for my collection and that was enough for me. You might look at the 2009 buffalo proof (might be a low mintage year) or buy a business strike buffalo. As long as you pay a fair market price, either from the mint or a trusted bullion house like APMEX, it's ok that you don't know what you are buying ..it's gold so it's not a mistake. In my opinion.
Andrew, I thank You and respect your opinion I agree our Bison seems the way to go. The other alternative, Although beautiful, there just seems to much confusion. I bought my last today and I'm definitly will get mine checked out in the few days they give to to assess your advice and direction towards investments. My problem is that since my stroke and coma in Costa Rico, 5 years ago, I'm definitly O.C.D. wanting everything thats pretty and immediate. I guess diversity is the key. Now do I purchase the Indian from the Mint or a 'capsulated' from a selller like Gainsville? I think I know the answer!! PS Thank You All. A free will for the asking! Oh!! Any suggestions or personal preferences where to shop?
Coin Collecting 102. What are the truth or myths about using one service or another. Is one service known as being more lax with one type of coin or another? Since I'm not buying anymore Ultras, should I roll the dice and submit what I feel the sharpest for grading. Ps, I have scored the beaches, attempting to collect Spanish Treasure on our coast, of Ft Pierce and only came accross this from one of Mels divers for defending him in a DUI. I got the better end of the deal!
I need some advice, I want To acquire a 2006 Silver anniversary Dollar set in grade MS '70' The price for a 3 set run all over the place yet individual coins are just as confusing. Should I fork out for a set now or wait till each particular component come down if ever? Have You noticed any Holiday bargains, Tks Eric
