Hi, so far this year I've bought the following gold coins for intrinsic
    value and investment value:

    1928 st. gaudens ms 63 $20.00 $1,081.00
    2009 gold American eagle ms70 $1,141.00
2009 ultra high relief $20.00 gold coin $1,149.00 (i bought this
one the day they were sold by the mint and i'm pretty sure the price was
    1,149.00
2009 American buffalo gold coin ms 70 early release $1,320.00
2009 American buffalo gold coin mint proof $1,364.95
(Have not received the AGB coins.)

    All prices include s/h
I like all of these coins I'm wondering should I just buy mint proof coins as an investment or will the other gold coins achieve the same values as if they were proof coins?
Is the American Buffalo ms70 early release ever going to be worth more then the mint proof American Buffalo gold coin?

Did I post this message in the correct forum?

Well the most profitable way to invest is to buy low and sell high ;)

Also, I'm pretty sure the UHR $20 was released at $1239 initially and I don't remember it ever getting any lower. I could be wrong and maybe it was $1189. Can't remember what I paid. I also bought it on release day.

If you're mostly concerned about these as a gold investment, then it looks like you're doing ok buying common date common grade coins at as low of a premium to the gold price as possible.

Once you get into the gold proof coins, there seems to be a pretty good premium over the gold price attached to those. So in buying those you're getting away from the good gold investment and getting more into a numismatic investment, which may or may not be what you're looking for.

I started buying 10oz silver bullion from a local dealer. He told me that the premium for gold proof coins tends to decrease in value as the price of gold increases. I've been collecting coins on and off for years and just started collecting gold coins.

In my opinion if you want profit and have a long horizon ...like won't even THINK about selling for 20 years ..then I'm a believer in pre civil war gold, slabbed by NGC or PCGS in the highest grade you can find. Buy it all.

Moderns are kitsch and tied to spot. Move away from the spot price and get into numismatics ..where the big boys come to play.

For the $6,000 you just spent on moderns ..you coulda had something like this:

    Charlotte gold:

or anything with a CC on it:

What you say makes a lot of sense but I like collecting the coins. Bring them out and comparing them. What can I say I like the coins. Don't get me started on "CC" coins.
I remember when the mint starting selling the the rediscovered "cc" in the mid 70s. People were sending in bad checks to pay for the "CC" coins but the mint had no mechanism in place to collect on the bad checks. A very large number of coins were shipped but never paid for. Me?
I thought all of them were too expensive - anywhere from $7.50 each to $33.00 each was to expensive for me. . .

The trick (in my mind, and in my opinion) is to diversify, buy rolls of silver eagles, silver maples, the gold coins you have, maybe a few others like maple leaf privy coins, but just own a lot of different things.... that way when and if you NEED to sell, at least one if not more of your items will be up in the "profit zone" where you actually dont mind selling it. In addition to this I would add the advice that you should only buy coins that are beautiful to you, chances are if you find them that attractive someone else will too, also you wont mind keeping them for an extended period of time. I find its much easier to justify selling at a loss if you hate the coin anyways, so just as a mental game for yourself try to stick to the coins you really are drawn to. (for me its EXACTLY the coins you have picked out so far) I think you're doing a great job and the only thing I would really reccomend would be to snag some more buffalos... One can never have too many buffalos. (although I would wait to buy, I think prices are a tad high right now.)

I buy two proof American Silver Eagles each year and will add rolls of to the mix. Did the Mint ever release 2009 ASE? I just now started buying 10oz silver bullion from local dealer.

I agree, the prices are high right now but I couldn't resist a proof AGB then I got a call from Monaco Coins offering a AGB MS70 ER which I 'm not sure was a good deal but I bought it anyway.
