I have read on other posts and will not attempt to argue or make a point but to question for the purpose of getting a logical answer. Why would anyone recommend an ASE for silver investment if the price is $30, $40 or more? Even though these are bullion this could only make sense as collecting and/or investing for the coin itself, and thus not an investment in the silver. Unless of course you would expect the price of silver to reach that point, which would mean you break even. I am not saying I like or dislike ASE's but I have seen them mentioned many times to people asking about silver investments. Some ASE's can be had for closer to spot and have bought and still own some myself, but the most I have paid for one is about 20% over spot. Am I missing something? I am only a beginner collector but am fairly comfortable with my investment skills so on the occasions when the two cross paths some things make little sense to me.
There are collector ASEs and bullion ASE , The 1st are produced in proof or satin finish by the mint for collectors , these are the $30 And up coins . The bullion coins are regular strike coins sold only for there bullion value . rzage
No problem , I think that confuses a lot of people new to the mints products , also the mint does not sell the bullion coins itself but sells bulk ammounts to dealers and others who then sell to investors . rzage
Right now you can buy the 2009 ASE bullion coins at $1.69 over spot plus shipping from a highly recognized online supplier. What I usually do is split an order with a co-worker....we usually get a couple 20 round mint tubes every couple weeks. I also collect the proof ASE's for my grandchildren....have you checked the secondary market prices for the 2008 proof ASE's? In fact...if you look back over the years of the proof ASE's....they have appreciated remarkably. Of course, I don't plan on selling these since they belong to my grandkids. I buy these directly from the US Mint thru the subscription plan as well as silver proof sets. I would not recommend buying the proof ASE's on the secondary market for "investment" purposes....definitely for collectibility. If anyone is paying $30-40 for business strike ASE....I think they either don't know what they are doing or just don't care about price...
Is there a thread or post with the best practice to purchasing the ASE proofs from the mint or local dealer? I am going to start a collection for my son, nephew and soon a niece. I have be researching a lot and visited a couple local dealers. A couple shops I would not go back at all. Is it best or most affordable to subscribe and/or buy the silver proof set directly from the mint?
Getting them from the Mint is the best way to go in my opinion, but to get older years a visit to a coin show is probably okay.
