If its in a capsule why would you want to take it out and handle it? I have many gold coins in capsules and you can handle them all the time without damage. And you can view the coin easily in them. I guess you could scratch the plastic on the capsule but you would have to try hard to do so.

starting thursday a.m. london opening to next wednesday a.m. london closing. if the gold average london price close and stay everyday at above $1,000.00, then the mint will raise its gold products by one bracket on sept. 23 (wed) 2009. UHR double eagle will then be $1,389.00. up from $1,339.00.

? I don't want to handle it. The question was whether it should be kept over a soft surface when it's still in the capsule, and whether there's any storage option sufficiently better to justify the risk of transferring it.

I've never transfered any coins from "mint holder" to another form of encapsulation but if I did I would think it wise to do so over a soft surface.

if the gold maintain over $1,000.00 an ounce from thursday to next wednesday morning. then the price of UHR double eagle will increase one bracket to $1,389.00 each. also the spouse's gold proof and uncirculated will up $25.00 each. it look like it will. so this week is our change to buy some gold coins.

    UHR sales now 92,346.

Looks like it will break 100,000 around the end of this month or early next month.

The Mint is removing the household ordering limit on Sept. 21st.

Hopefully this means blank supplies are holding steady and that they can squeak in AGE and Buffalos this year.

Doesn't really matter what the mint does if nobody can afford to buy any coins. :goof:

why would the mint just issue the 2010 UHR double eagle instead of continue the 2009 one?. and if the mint wish to continue producing each year. i have no problem on that. as long as the year should be change each year.

    Storage and design

Does anyone know why they went with a split collar? Is that the reason there are three vertical lines in the edge inscription, 120 degrees apart? The book talks about using the split collar but doesn't explain the motivation for it.

Earlier replies (thank you all) said the mint capsule was adequate protection for long term storage. Why doesn't it create a risk of scratching? The coin can slide around inside it, and is made of 24K gold, which is of course easy to scratch. Is the plastic so soft that it doesn't scratch, or so smooth that it doesn't scratch, or do I need to minimize handling of the capsule? Thanks for putting up with the elementary questions, everybody.

And, wow. I found a place that combined a soft surface with sunlight and held up the capsule, with and without a magnifier. The piece looks like it's alive. I'd like to travel through time and show it to St. Gaudens.

Encapsulate it & get the coin graded,if you want to sell it some day.

If you feel a need to exchange the coin out of it's present capsule by all means do so Info, however I don't feel the exchange is warrented. The mint capsule is adequite enough.....even with the 'slippage'. MHO

I'm not educated enough to feel any needs (except to stare at it!), but you're all helping with that. Thanks again for the replies.
