This is a real coin or counterfeit. Here is the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/BEAUTIFUL-LAKSHMI-UKL-ONE-ANNA-1616-COIN-VERY-RARE_W0QQitemZ280393648270QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_203?hash=item4148c3888e&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 Thank you.
It looks real Avi but I am no expert on these coins, my one concern is the side with the date on, it seems to have something struck under it! Please also be advised that my eye's are not what they once were LOL
Bill look at the date side for me, I know you have good eye's LOL has it been struck on something else?
Lose your glasses again? :goofer: Those look like casting flaws. But why would the East India Company issue a coin with such a decidedly native theme in 1616? :hammer:
Well at one stage they were very native friendly as they were in the process of expanding into mainland India via Surat 1608 onwards
1616 was well before machine presses were invented the first screw type presses were in the 1650's, this doesn't even remotely look like a hand struck piece to me. FAKE !
Avi400, refer to the following thread you started once before on the same subject. http://www.cointalk.com/t36379/
Hi, That is the reason that I don't want to make mistake , and buy fake coin. We must to be carful. Thank you, all of you.
Coins were being milled as early as 1561 under Queen Elizabeth I, but the process couldn't match hand striking for cost efficiency so it was abandoned after a while and didn't return for almost a century, by which time coin making machinery was more efficient than hand-striking methods... But I digress....
This is not a coin at all. It is either a temple token or a modern fantasy piece. From the looks of it, I would say modern fantasy piece. Do not bid on this at all. There were no milled coins for date in India. I have been looking at this seller for sometime now and all he sells is fantasy pieces or else modern counterfeit coins.
If you scroll down below picture you will all see. " This is a rare and scare coin" See ya by! No sale
I am not sure why folks make solid statements like this without stating any reasons or at least stating what you know about the series to add a level of confidence to this statement.
I did a little bit of reading about East India Company and this is how I understand it. These coins were not made yesterday and some are highly collectible. All you gotta do is go to India ebay or UK ebay and you will see. If you are asking if it's a real coin, yes it's a real coin/token. I don't think the coins that East India Company were made to be spent as in a circulated coin context if that's your question. You can google quite a bit of info on these as it was awhile back since I read about them and I don't remember that well. I like the company's coins. I guess it would fall in the category of fantasy coin.
These are not coins/tokens issued by the East India Company. These might be collectible but only as a novelty and not by serious collectors. I do not see how these might be "highly collectible". Some claim that these were temple tokens and it might well be true, but my personal opinion is that most of these on ebay were manufactured in the last decade or so.
...and also due to the fact that it is so blatantly fake. Your response would be the same if someone shows you a 2009 Reagan dime-- no other explanation needed!
