I'm back to ask you collectors about coins like this, it doesn't look like the other ones listed on the bay, could it still be real? Jesus isn't holding a cross and the reverse doesn't look like the other's ones either. Any ideas on this coin? Here's a couple of pics!

Wrong attribution. Not Phocas. More likely to be Constantine VII.

Also, no weight, diameter stated by seller. Auction is ongoing and I can't comment on authenticity.

It's almost certainly clipped. My personal opinion: there are better examples to be had.

I don't like the coin. It is crudely executed and it could very well be a fake.

I think you can do better.

Here are a couple of examples of an AV solidi and AV histamenon nomisma from that period. Both coins were sold recently at auction.

Constantine VII, with Romanus II, AV solidus, Constantinople, 950-955 AD

Nicephorus II Phocas, with Basil II, AV Histamenon Nomisma. Constantinople, 964-965 AD

As can be clearly seen, the workmanship is vastly superior to the coin you are considering.

I suggest that you build up funds to buy one really nice type coin from a reputable dealer, through MA Shops, Vcoins, CNG or Forum. In the end it is worth the expenditure.

Yeah, that's sound advice there, I'll build up some funds and look at a later date at a reputable dealer! Very impressed that you both knew what it was! thumb3.gif ~Cheers!
