well i took it to fresno coin and the looked at it and said it wasnt gold be he said he didnt know what it was.
lol oh ok. maybe you can do the gold displacement test, I'm sure someone can pull up a link for you to try it
I agree! Better yet, see if you can find an Assayer that might test the Bar cheap or for free! Considering that you are young, a really nice Assayer might just want to help out at no charge. I know that the chances are low that an Assayer would test it for free but you never know unless you ask. In any case, you need someone that can test the Bar, no matter what purity the Gold is in it (if in fact it has Gold in it). An Assayer can tell you exactly what the Bar contains! Frank
If you know any college or high school science teacher they can do a specific gravity/density test. SInce gold has a density of 19.3 gr/cc, a 200 gram bar of 100% gold should have a volume of 10.52 cubic centimeters or 10.52 ml of water displacement. 75% gold (18 karat) should be about 12.6 ml displacement. If you have a syringe ( no needle needed, maybe from animal supply) that accurately measures ml, I can tell you how to do yourself, but chem lab equipment will be better. Notice from the chart below, 100% copper would be almost twice the size at 22.2 ml displacement. If you wish to spend the time looking, you might be able to find info about your bar at this link - Click Here
Personally, I think you're nuts to try to test this bar yourself and perhaps damage and ruin any antique value it might possess as an artifact. If you don't have the resources or contacts to get it assayed professionally, put it in a safe place and wait until you do. Don't let the frenzy of the crowd rush you into making an error.
He has now cut it with a saw. He Posted on another forum There goes any antique value:desk::desk::desk: Timmy
