When did NGC start slabbing private mint bullion?

I was on JMB and I saw this 2 oz silver Egyptian Gods: Osiris silver round minted by Silvertowne and I was surprised because I've never seen NGC or PCGS grade/slab a coin minted by a private company.

Is this something new? Or does anyone know what's going on with this?

They have been doing this for sometime now you don't see them because there always incognito.

 

-Agreed, for quite a time. The Franklin Mint, for example, produces coins for a large number of countries and all can be graded and slabbed. Here is an example, not mine, and you can see the FM in the text on the slab.

 

That's different though because they're doing it on behalf of a nation. Like they have a contract right?

Idk it seems strange to me that NGC is grading this stuff. Does PCGS do it too?

You no, but if you became a well know company then yea there’s a good chance at least one would

 

Dan Carr produces private medals (in ADDITION to the "coins")
TPG will grade the bullion medals that he strikes

If you get as famous as DC, then sure NGC will slab whatever you make, probably

 

They started doing this when they found out they could make money certifying them. You must be a well known reputable company.

Surely there must be some sort of criteria.

 

It’s whatever they want really, but generally anything in a reference guide will get slabbed. There’s no checklist to it, it’s their discretion in terms of privately made things

Nope. Not how that works with them.

 

They won't slab obscene or criminal momentos.

What BB21 and others are saying is that non-legal tender commemoratives -- private coins, so to speak -- are collected, are considered artistic, and if they have a BIG ENOUGH following, will merit consideration for being graded.

I'm just saying money talks and I they're a private for-profit company. Offer them enough money and they'll slab anything. If I paid them enough they'd create and slab a classic car. Or baseball card. Or whatever I wanted them to. Money trumps principles when it's great enough.

 

Beyond validation of PM content, I have no idea.
