No I am not in the news busness. I was just reading your posts here about the fractional sizes of American Eagle Gold and thought I might have missed out in not buying any of them. It sounds like they might be a wanted item in the future!

That is the hope for those of us who did buy them. People laughed at us saying that we wasted our money on pointless stuff..... now who's laughing. :kewl: Once the numismatic community finally realizes how low a mintage these coins have and the popularity continues to rise, demand will increase and so will the prices. So what will the level of demand be? That is yet to be determined.

Yankee, I wish that I had bought more of them, but I didn't find out until the last day or so. Elaine brought it to our attention that the mintage would be very low, and a few of us were still able to order a $10 Unc. Yep, I should have ordered several.

My 2 1oz gold eagles arrived from AMEX today I noticed one of them has 2 small marks on the sun rays looks like maybe they dropped it. the second is perfect! Since I got these coins just for the gold I dont think I will send it back. I still have another 1oz gold eagle and 20 2009 silver eagles coming as soon as my check clears their bank. All and all I found AMEX service good!

You hit the nail right on the head there. After all, the entire reason the fractionals are being discontinued is because the demand for them was too low to justify minting them. It just doesn't make any logical sense to assume the demand will suddenly shoot up out of nowhere when the demand for these has been constantly going down over the last few years. I doubt the value of any of these will go up much, except in direct proportion to any increases in the value of gold and platinum.

That being said, fractionals are not much worse of an investment than the full ounce gold eagles, gold buffaloes, and platinum eagles... they just aren't any better either. If anything, as the historical demand shows, you're probably a lot better off with the full ounce coins as demand for them has been showed to be higher... again, the entire reason the fractionals are being discontinued in the first place.

The fractional gold buffaloes may be an exception, since 2008 will be the only year they've ever been minted. Collectors who can't afford the full ounce buffaloes may be chasing after them, raising the demand a tad proportionaly over the full ounce ones. However, after as many collectors who are willing to pay for them have them, they go back to being worth no more or less than the proportionate value of the full ounce ones. As someone on ths board wisely said once, "a mintage of two is still too many if only one person wants one."

Another really good point that's already been brought up is you can't look at the raw mintage of the platinum coins and figure that they're rare enough to post big value gains. It's not the rarity that makes a coin go up in value, it's the rarity relative to demand. I have a coin from Fiji that's rarer than a 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent, but it's still only worth about $5, because the demand is nowhere enar what the key for the Lincoln cent series is. There are few collectors that buy platinum coins, because the high value of platinum makes them too expensive for many to be able to afford. As such, demand is a lot lower... the rarity relative to demand of 1,000 platinum coins is still less than 10 times that many gold coins. The mintages of platinum eagles is not that low, when you take the much lower demand into account.

I agree it is not certain if the fractional eagles from 2008 with the W mintmark will appreciate much. The only coins that give them hope are the 1999 W error gold fractionals that do sell for a premium. Although the mintages released of those errors in unknown it may be they are close to the 2008 W numbers.

Also the Jackie Robinson unc gold commemorative had very low demand yet later it is selling for many multiples to its original cost. I think the future of the gold eagles is the collector base and their are many collectors of $5 gold eagles.

To assemble a collection of the $5 eagles is much lower than to assemble a collection of one ounce eagles. I think the best chance to make appreciation is with the $5 and $10 coins.

It may take a couple of years for the market to see what really happened in 2008, right now it is hard to see how low the mintages fell for many of these coins. Just like the spouse coins that have tailed of dramatically and will one day be collected, the eagles and plat coins will have their day.

My favorites in gold though were the buffalo fractionals, the mint gave us a steal on those.

do you miss fractional eagle and buffalo gold coins?. can we all tell the u.s. mint to proceed producing by 2010 and thereafter?.

    Nope.

My current discontent is due to the complete lack of any '09 collectible bullion. I just want them to produce the 1 oz. versions and I will be happy.

2008w american eagle uncirculated 1/4 ounce gold is the lowest mintage so far among the am eagle and am buffalo series. only 9,200 pieces. see the coin to go up and pass $1,200.00 range in the near future.
