I picked up a good lot of IHP's today and have two RPD's that I can't seem to locate in the CPG or in the Snow guide. Admittedly I'm not very good at navigating through the Snow / variety site. Any help is appreciated. Below are quick pic's of an 1895 where the flag on the 5 is prepunched fairly dramatically. The picture isn't great but in hand it's really nice. Second one pictured is an 1899 with the first 9 doubled (inside the top loop). I couldn't locate either of these. Any help is appreciated. I've also included a close up of the diamonds on another non-RPD's IH I bought. Just love the condition and for $1 each I can't not buy them. Thanks for looking.
Thank you Mr Hair (or Ms Hair?). S-3 is exactly it. When I looked on my laptop last night I couldn’t find a matching photo but it pops right up on my phone. I appreciate the help.
The 1899 is possibly an S 25. Good sites: http://www.fly-inclub.org/ and https://www.indianvarieties.com/pen...1899-indian-head-penny/page/2/?orderby=rating
Drawing a blank on the 1899 using Rick Snow's latest book. I'd want to dig the crud on the digits out and see if it's S15. I can't find any others that have repunching on the top inside of the 1st 9. S25 has repunching at the bottom inside of the upper loop of the 1st 9.
Here are Dave Poliquins' diagnostics for the 1895. http://www.indiancentvarieties.com/1895_variety003.html I think the 99 is a S-25. Rick Snow's attribution guide has no photo, only has a description of the S-25 and Poliquin does not have a plate coin for the variety so he has not done an attribution. The 1899 S-15 has a rather wide faint repunching to the east of the lower loop in the 8. Both dates varieties are listed by Snow as scarce.
His latest version has a photo of S25. Date position is different from that of the subject coin. Time to dig out a rose thorn and de-crud the date under a microscope. Is there also repunching evident below the lower loop of the 2nd 9?
I agree, get the crud off and see what all is there. If that is repunching under the second 9 I think it may be a discovery coin.
Looks like what I was thinking was repunching at the top inside of the first 9 came off with the rose thorn.
I zoomed in on your closeup and it still looks like it could be a repunched date to me. Try the lighting from a different angle. Looks like both the 8 and second 9 show repunching at the inside top. Another site by Russell Doughty: https://www.indianvarieties.com/page/5/?s=1899&post_type=product
Still hard to tell. I arrowed what I think are the signs of RPD. The only one I feel pretty confident about is the inside the lower loop of the second 9 and inside the upper loop of the 8.
Moisten a toothpick in acetone or distilled water and pick away at it a little and see if it will loosen.
