Elaine.. do you have a handle on the '04 and '05 Platinum eagles... I know these are the rarest mintages but I've seen conflicting numbers. The red book indicates just #846 for a 2005 1oz pf and #1,073 for 2004. Other sources suggest #6000 range for each of those years. Any idea what the accurate #'s are? Thank you

to ikas: 2004 platinum proof mintage is 5,833. while that of 2005 is 6,700. 2008 is 5,030. which is the lowest for one ounce platinum eagle.

The original was conceived and designed as a small diameter coin, to capture the full relief that was intended, but the specification from Congress was 34mm. The 27mm coin was developed but scrapped due to the legal spec. from Congress and is precisely why they are now extremely rare.

I am glad the Mint opted to produce this modern UHR in keeping with St. Gaudens desired intentions and went with the 27mm design. It's likely the closest I will ever get to the real deal.

the size of UHR double eagle $20.00 gold is the same size with that of $10.00 indian head gold coin. but it is very thick. look like not a real coin.

That is correct. The $10 Indian Head also has a 27mm design, like the original HR double eagle and now the modern UHR double eagle.

I sorta understand why people want a larger coin -- bigger is better. Fortunately, for those who want the larger coins, there are plenty of options for acquiring a double eagle that is larger than 27mm. For those who wanted the original 27mm design, options were extremely limited until this modern revision.

Thickness never really mattered to me, I guess. At this point it's a matter of taste since none of us are gonna be walking around paying for goods and services with these out of our pockets.

Edit: Classic saying about taste redacted to protect those with delicate sensibilities.

Virtually all of the slabbed UHR coins being listed on ebay are MS70 coins. Is it possible that the Mint is producing only perfect UHR's?

I am not happy with the size either, I thought it would be bigger. Here are pics of high relief and UHR taken next to each other.

Thanks for the pics. I agree 100% after seeing them up close to each other. The new ones don't hold a candle to the larger ones.

I liked the thicker size, and liked the dish type allowing for the high relief, but when compared this way, the original is much easier on the eyes.

    Thanks again!

It is hard to compare anything to the original (I have yet to see the 1907 HR in person) but I am sure that I'd prefer it.

9 out of 10 times the original is always better

With that, I did a side by side of the '09UHR and '06RevPF.
Although I like the '06RevPF I prefer the UHR.

uhr double eagle $20.00 gold slowly increasing its sales figures to 52,373. i think by the end of this year. the final mintage will only be less than 70,000. can this coin be consider a rare one?.

Unbelievable! I just ran a quick check of what some sold for on eBay. Several MS-70s sold for $3,500.00, but supposedly the first perfect UHR graded by PCGS sold for $10,000.00 It started out as a BIN for $12,500.00, but the best offer was $10,000.00! Was that Charlie's??? 120387517794

I have one on order that is already sold. :) Ordered Feb 2nd ... current expected ship date Apr 24th.

Tip: If you have one on order and they have delayed shipment, make sure your Credit Card expiration date is far enough out! I would think they would contact any "declined" orders, but you never know... would stink to lose it. Also, you must call direct to update the CC on a previous order... doing it the online account does not cut it!

Tip 2: I have heard from another dealer it is worth more if you don't open the box. Seems logical, but not very much fun. :) Anyway, research this for yourself and use your own judgment for your needs.

    Regards,
    Michael

I plan on buying one more UHR. Whether they are ultimately rare or not will unfold in time. Considering the gold version will only be minted once (barely, at that, considering how they pushed it through w/o Congress) I think if the mintage is <100K we'll have a coin with decent numismatic value on top of the metal worth. Like the 20th Anniversary Sets.

If not, I still got a mighty fine lookin' chunk o' gold.
