@lordmarcovan is my friend and undoubtedly is a friend to us all. He gives much of himself to the hobby and to making the world a better place. You've all seen the great enthusiasm he has for coins and his unselfishness towards others. LordM has been instrumental in shaping me as a collector and I could never repay the favor of this lifetime gift he bestowed.

His CT handle describes him perfectly as an Eclectic & avid numismatist

If you haven't seen or heard of his once renowned Holey Coin Ensemble you should check it out. As I understand, he had to divest himself of the "holey" collection back around 2013 and since then has slowly begun reassembling a new "holey" collection.

LordM is the quintessential numismatologist with a variety of interests and in his pursuit of coins he is always willing to sell and trade to knock down the next.

I was lucky enough to have acquired the coin below, in late 2016, from Lord Marcovan's "Eclectic Box of 20" Collection:

Affectionately known as the "Hippie Coin" I never get tired of admiring this beauty.

Not too long ago I was perusing an email list of coins and noticed:
    RAGUSA (Croatia)
1337 ff., Dinar, St Blasius / Christ, VF hole

I knew immediately it was meant for our favorite champion of numismatics and in the spirit of spreading some cheer this year for a well deserving guy I present this Holy Holey to LordM for his Holey Ensemble.

I hope I can spur on some others to help make LordM's Holey Collection great again.

If you wish to contribute a holey coin to this cause you may PM me or post a pic of the coin here and I will respond with a mailing address where the contributed coins will be collected and forwarded to LordM.

    All best,

    Doug

(small shout out to @Aethelred for the PO Box and @Curtisimo who knows this type coin well)

I had the pleasure of meeting Lord M at @Aethelred 's shop in Ashville last
year. He is very knowledgeable not only on coins as well many historical
and current topics. If it weren't for my allergies and wife's allergies and
asthma, we would give him and his family a run on fostering dogs and cats.

Wow. This thread is really something.

Nice to see the old “Hippie Coin” again, and its holey counterpart... wow!

    Thank you.

Holey Smokes!! First time I perused the holey hat coins. I had only seen them from a distance before. Man, that hat belongs in a museum.

    No museum would want it.

It's in an old Dobbs hatbox at the top of my closet, with no coins on it at the moment. But I've been sort of (very casually) gathering more holeys over the past few years. I'm pinning them on a cork board for the time being. Eventually the hat will be repopulated. I don't know about the vest.

The Gothic florin on the left side of the picture below is likely the sole survivor of the original Holey Coin Vest.

Here's a nice piece I acquired in a recent swap here on CoinTalk. I like love tokens more than plain old holeys. This one is special because it has a historically identifiable person's name and birthdate on it, plus the host coin is a high-details Bust half, which is nice. (Extra credit because the "S" initial also happens to match my own surname.)

And here's another recent acquisition: a fun three-piece holey lot including a 1798 cent, which I recently got from one of my regular swapping partners on Collectors Universe. I had never seen one of those Louisiana Purchase medals before.

I will probably sell my more expensive "mainstream" collection later in life- hopefully I will get a chance to do so before I croak- so that my heirs will have those funds.

The plan for this presently very casual, back-burner, sideline collection is to have something to play with on a low budget afterwards, when I might be a retiree on a fixed income.

Holey coins are a lot of fun and they're usually pretty cheap, though it is still possible to spend good money on them (especially when they're gold- which is why I sold all the gold off the hat during the recession).

This is just a fun little humble, quirky collection for the pure joy of collecting, rather than "investment" or beauty, or any of those other highfalutin' motives.

I was just looking through the link to all those "holey" coins. Wow! What a collection!

I had no idea so many people would make holes in coins back then. What was the purpose? A cheaper way of making jewelry?
