I wasn't there but I heard and read about it. Our favorite CoinTalk section is 6 years old this month. But there was a battle for its creation; and it took years to win it. Some of the soldiers who fought for us are still at our side. I would like you, eyewitnesses of this birth, to tell us this story. The victory thread: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/ancients-thanks-to-management.255471/#post-2022457 And some of the battle's topics: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/separate-forums-needed-for-world-and-ancient.244839/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/world-coins-and-ancients.221944/#post-1629923
Happy Birthday Ancients! I remember being a strictly "modern" guy back when it was World/Ancients forum. I dabbled in world coins so I would occasionally click on an ancients thread. I remember thinking "wow, these guys(and gals) know a heck of a lot and how the heck can they identify these coins?!" Flash forward to 2020 and I am now almost fully immersed in ancients and only dabble in moderns. Glad that the two were split and I am happy to see how the "Ancients" forum has flourished. There are so many incredible people with such a wealth of knowledge.
I love this place, i would of been lost with out it prob and I got quite a nice collection with everyones help here. Happy Birthday Ancients, many more years!
I mean, they've already had more years than all the other coins here on the forums... Ok, that was a really bad joke. It would've been better but I'm really tired.
It's been a swell time here, especially since Ancients got our own board. I'm not sure I would have lasted if I had to wade through posts about modern coins. Ancients have been my only interest. As a side note, I really miss some of the posters from that early period, especially Stevex6. He may have ruffled a lot of feathers, but he made everything interesting and funny. And lately I've been missing TIF as well. I guess she is busy with life.
One of the reasons I'm glad we have a separate forum is so that people are less likely to inject their politics into it. It's so very predictable that someone from another forum would do so right away in this thread.
I first broached the subject in 2007 https://www.cointalk.com/threads/separate-board-for-ancients.30003/ nothing happened...and I don't remember but only a few from then...very little interest at the time--the fools!
Yeah, yeah. Post a coin or don't let the Bes hit ya on the way out That's what a joke looks like. The image probably terrifies ya:
When I joined Coin Talk in 2009, the World section was subtitled to point out that it was OK to post other world coins besides the new Euro coins as if I was expected to know what a Euro coin was. I though they were things made to be spent not collected. I most deeply regret the move toward the politics and personality clashes that I see as becoming more common these days. I found the problem with the previous combined World section that most 'modern' posts were 'What is it worth?' oriented. I hope what was started when we got the separate section can remain a haven for people who collect, study and share freely.
There were many times, we all could have belonged in a mental institution. Here is an image of Steve and me in the early days:
