Hello all, I have been reading a lot of coin collecting books lately. Now, I am looking for a new one. I just read Scott Travers' Top 88 Coins. It was a very good book. What coin books do you recommend? I am interested in general coin collecting books, grading books and specific coin series books. After I read them, I will review them on my website. Thanks!!
In order: 1) The Guide Book of US Coins (the red book) 2) Cherrypickers; 3) See Whitman Publishing, there is a series for different designs, 'the Bowers' series. 4) Coming Soon: The Guide Book of the Guide Book, about collecting the many editions, special editions and varieties for the Red book. (should be out March, 2009).
Frank any particular reason for the Cherrypickers also are you the author of #4 , sounds good . rzage:thumb:
Yeah, the ANA 6th edition is a great source for grading. If you're ready to do some reading, check out Collecting and Investing in Rare Coins by David Bowers. It's printed as a $30 book but I got the hardcover on ebay for $5. Published in 2005. It's 645 pages. I've been reading it for a loooong time. I'm halfway through. Some of it gets a little dull. Other parts are very interesting. He shares a lot of good information. It's one you can work on for a while.
I'd recommend: In Yankee Doodle’s Pocket: The Myth, Magic and Politics of Money in Early America by Will Nipper: http://www.bowmanstonepress.com/ If you like reading, it's a book meant to be read over-and-over-and-over. :thumb: Ribbit
Cherrypickers; Cause I know one of the contributors. #4: bows head, goes into deep thought. [nods silently]
I recently recieved as a gift, The Experts Guide to Investing in Rare Coins by Q. Dave Bowers, that is also a must read, and David Ganz has a gret new bok out as well, I cannot think of the title right now. My latest book purchase was the set of 4 attribution guides by Rick Snow, I have yet to sit down with a roll of Indians and a scope yet, but I will soon
I like the Half Cent Die State Book by Ron Manley. You can find it for about $60-$65 if you look (or PM me and I'll put you in contact with a book dealer that should have it for that price), it's normally more. Or, for a more general book, I'm surprised no one has recommended Walter Breen's Encyclopedia yet. I understand it's currently out-of-print and pricey, but it's a must-have in my opinion. If you'd like something a bit different, Medals of the United States Mint by Julian is extremely good. I could suggest more, but I don't want to overload you.
I have just started " A Mercenary's Guide to the Rare Coin Market" by David Hall. Rather interesting for a 1987 book. Very intensive as to the financial side. Jim
Amazing book. Reading it now. "Grading US Coins" by Jim Halperin. Grading for mint state coins. re: "I am interested in ... specific coin series books" Well, which series ? If you're a type collector like me, and you like 'em all, I would strongly suggest Penny Whimsy by Sheldon. It helps one understand how people were thinking about coins about 50 years ago, and how we got where we are today.
Just got three new books today... "Looking Through Lincoln Cents" "A Guide Book of Lincoln Cents" "The Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents" I am voraciously devouring them, one by one!!!
last time read a coin book (new york times guide to coin collecting) all they talked about were the state quarters
Add this one to your list. Gives amazing background. A must read: http://www.cointalk.com/forum/t48336/#post526892
