Hey guys, I have a question that I hope a jeweler or someone familiar with jewelry can help me with.

Im wondering if jeweler’s ever allow for the customer to provide the precious metals and then pay solely for the labor & service of the jeweler?

I’d really like to have just a plain 22K gold band for a ring and I’m wondering if say a ring weighs 8 grams if it’s possible to give the jeweler like an ounce of gold so they get whatever is left? (~23 grams = ~$1200)

    Thanks!

Absolutely. I've done it. Many times women like to consolidate various diamonds into one piece. My mother did it. My wife did it. And I know plenty of others.

Oh awesome! Do you know if they’ll go as far as to accept extra gold as payment? Normally that wound sound kind of silly but jewelers use it regularly so perhaps it could be used as supplies?

I've dabbled in jewelry making. My guess is that plenty of jewelers would be open to negotiating something like that.

Make sure you go to a "mom and pop" jeweler as opposed to a national
chain/mall store like Zales or Jared.

Most jewelers, even the small ones, no longer manufacture their own products. They are all pretty much resellers.

They may go as far as mounting loose stones, but they don't have the time or equipment to cast their own settings. These are bought wholesale.

You will be trading value for value + profit margin in this transaction. If you're looking for some kind of "embedded sentimental value" using legacy gold, it won't end up being the exact same material.

I lot of jewelers don't do anything in house. They send it all out to have any work done. Nothing wrong with that. Some jewelers will buy your scrap gold and with others it's not legal. The laws are different from state to state.

Each jeweler is different and it's up to that jeweler to decide what's in their best interest.

My experience trying to get local jewelers to set gems I own has been that not only do they insist on supplying their own metal, they refuse to work with silver and will only work with gold. Trying to get them to separate a charge for creativity and labor from precious metal profit has been futile.

Only my local experience. I'm sure there are more accommodating jewelers elsewhere.

Sounds like you're looking to give away gold for free. ;) If that's the case, just hold a contest in the contest section! laughhard.gif

Nah I’m just looking for a way to get a gold wedding band when I’m limited on cash but have some extra gold.

I know I could sell the gold but around here they pay 5-10% under spot at the places that buy gold/silver/platinum.

A professional supply source for jewelers , that has most all the metals from silver, gold and platinum as well as drop and squeeze for your own gemstones .is Riogrande.com ..but expensive. A much less expensive place is Tripps and they sell to anyone who says they work with jewelry is
Settings, Jewelry Making Kits, Gems by Tripps: Gold, Silver

Thanks Jim, but I’m not looking for jeweler supplies I was asking if jewelers would accept my precious metals as payment.

Like if I said “Here is a 1oz American Gold Eagle, can you make me an 8 gram gold ring out of it and I’ll let you keep the 23 grams of leftover gold?”

    That kind of thing.

That sounds like a bad deal, for you

I agree, you will almost always be taken in a deal like that as the jeweler has an upper hand in the deal. The upper hand is you want something from him. Cash is king, wait till you get enough would be my thought. :phantom:

It was just an example .

The numbers I just made up randomly.

Most likely I would use a 1/2 oz Gold Eagle in such a deal. Not a full ounce.

Try a pawn shop as jewelers don't charge nearly as much to burnish or shine the surfaces as fabrication from start. Just a thought. Jim

Find someone local that does custom work.

I have 2 places within 5 miles from me that will make anything you want from any metal you have.
I had one guy order in an 18k ring and swapped out 90% of the cost with trade in 14k necklaces.

I really want someone to turn one of my American Gold Eagles into the “One Ring” from LOTR.

That was my whole purpose when asking my question.

I would want it to be 22K with the rest being silver and with zero copper. Only gold & silver.

I just don’t know where I can find someone to do the engravings for the inscription.

    Interesting.. But why? o_O

I once purchased a huge 14K ring with a amazing Superman logo.. When I first got I thought I would never get rid of it. About 5 years later I got tired of wearing it and sold it.

My purpose in telling you this is why have a ring in that style.. In time you might get tired of it then regret destroying your coins.

But they are your coins.. You can do whatever you want with them.

Interesting replica I found for sale. $800.00
