Got a nice medieval coin this morning before work.

AV Ecu d'or a la couronne ND Angers Mint
    Struck 31st./ December 1461
Louis XI "The Spider King" 1461-83

Louis and his Father (Charles VII) did not get along. Finally, Louis sought protection at the Burgundian Cout of Philip "The Good"
In 1461, upon Charles VII death, Louis returned to France and was crowned King. He tried to make reforms, even though France was still at War with England (since 1337) In 1472, Charles "The Bold" succeeded Philip Le Bon as the new Duke of Burgundy, and alled himself with Edward IV of England. Louis skillfully concluded the Treaty of Picquigny in 1475 with the England thus ending the Hundred + Years War. Even better, in 1475 Charles was killed and his army annilhilated at Nancy in 1475 by the Swiss Army. 220px-Louis_XI_(1423-1483).jpg lf - 2020-10-29T200927.274.jpg lf - 2020-10-29T200942.531.jpg

Congratulations - another beautiful coin, and another French one!

Unfortunately all the lots I bid on went way beyond my budget - the first time I have not managed to secure any lots in this sale.:(

Some of the prices acheived for the top grade classic coins were amazing - the 1839 proof set went for over a million

The high grade Una and the Lion alone went for over €1 million. The set added up to about €1.3 million with the juice. It doesn't look like there were any bids on the combined lot to keep the set together.

Pretty incredible stuff in that sale. Needless to say, I didn't add a proof 1896 Trade dollar in gold to my set.
