I think I can. It's a denaro gherardino of Naples, possibly of Charles II or Robert d'Anjou. Hard to be 100% certain in this condition.
Hi Seth- Many thanks for your help. With being from "Bella Napoli" then it's not Sicilian--- I think they were somewhat apart then? To tell the truth, this coin is one of the best of the 5 I picked up. I liked the cross and the French flower.
Okay- Not to pester everyone but with everyone's help I was able to find an exact match at an old London Ancient Coins, LTD. auction. According to the coin bio it is a denaro gherardino BI from Naples with Charles II as ruler. You nailed it Seth!
Once again, @seth77 knows orders of magnitude more about the historical context than I do, but Naples had been associated with Sicily back to the 12th c., after the Normans conquered Apulia, Calabria, and Salerno, along with Sicily itself. Because of the combination of mainland and island, it was known as 'The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.' As he noted, the fleur de lis refers to the current ruling dynasty, founded by a younger ('cadet') member of the French royal one (...'d'Anjou').
Well, the Angevins still styled themselves as kings of Sicily after losing the island in the aftermath of the "vespri siciliani" but their headquarters was from 1282 onward Naples -- "il Regno" remained a domain of the Angevins until 1442.
