Thanks Donna- I'll get the hang of this sooner or later--- hopefully much sooner. Hopefully you saw the pix; I'll try and upload again.
I see that once I insert a pic that I cannot write anymore, so I'll have to think about how I post/send things for everyone. Sorry for any confusion or protocol lapses... Marchal
No problem, but after you insert a picture, the return (or enter) key brings you to the line below it. Just like this.
Now I'll try and get both sides of the coin instead of two pics of the same side... And voila... the spacebar does the trick! Again, thanks Kentucky... Marchal Donna and Fitz--- I hope this post here is worthy of your attention. Appreciate the help, y'all.
@marchal steel, I went through All of this. And still have to keep my wits about me when figuring out how to toggle between pictures and text, like @Kentucky said. As I keep telling myself, just remember, there's literacy, and Then there's computer literacy. ...Like all websites of this nature, this one Does have its own subset of idiosyncracies. How programming is done, I guess. (Imojee for 'shrug; what do I know?') ...Meanwhile, shoutout to @seth77: Can You Help with this?
I think I can. It's a denaro gherardino of Naples, possibly of Charles II or Robert d'Anjou. Hard to be 100% certain in this condition.
Hi Seth- Many thanks for your help. With being from "Bella Napoli" then it's not Sicilian--- I think they were somewhat apart then? To tell the truth, this coin is one of the best of the 5 I picked up. I liked the cross and the French flower.
Okay- Not to pester everyone but with everyone's help I was able to find an exact match at an old London Ancient Coins, LTD. auction. According to the coin bio it is a denaro gherardino BI from Naples with Charles II as ruler. You nailed it Seth!
Once again, @seth77 knows orders of magnitude more about the historical context than I do, but Naples had been associated with Sicily back to the 12th c., after the Normans conquered Apulia, Calabria, and Salerno, along with Sicily itself. Because of the combination of mainland and island, it was known as 'The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.' As he noted, the fleur de lis refers to the current ruling dynasty, founded by a younger ('cadet') member of the French royal one (...'d'Anjou').
Well, the Angevins still styled themselves as kings of Sicily after losing the island in the aftermath of the "vespri siciliani" but their headquarters was from 1282 onward Naples -- "il Regno" remained a domain of the Angevins until 1442.
Geez people- I feel like I've got to read 4 or 5 volumes just to get permission to post a question after reading what y'all have posted. Well, I'll get started... and it's good reading what everyone is saying. BTW Vgo--- I'm treading water up and down the millenia! Thanks people!
No, @marchal steel, Please Don't go down that rabbit-hole!!! It's more about knowing that in any given context, someone is Going to know Something that you didn't. ...And, often enough, that can amount to them knowing 'more' than you, in a substantive sense. But these are the people who like innately intelligent questions. For one thing, they've Been there. Fear Not!!!
