Hello, I’m planning on purchasing a Morgan Dollar in a PCGS slab tomorrow. I’m wondering how much should it weigh? I just want to make sure I’m getting an authentic piece. Thanks.

If it is in a genuine PCGS slab then the coin is authenticated as real and the weight won't matter. I don't know what the weight of a slab and coin is. But Morgan dollars weigh 26.7 grams + or - .097 gram.

that will vary a bit with each of the holder types.. PCGS alone has at least 10-12 different slabs over the years each with a slightly different weight. On a side note i generaly "trust" PCGS holders.. the fakes I have run across are usualy pretty obvious

I looked it up on PCGS and there weren’t any issues mentioned for that serial number.

Then it might be a fake slab or coin or most likely both are fake then but type it in again just in case if you messed up

What I meant is the coin showed up, according to PCGS, it should be fine.

Wow a cc nice morgan I would buy that in a heart beat. I like cc morgans that most can afford in high grade. DON'T have a cc yet but if I were to buy one I would want mine in a pcgs certified gsa holder a little more pricey than normal slab cc morgan but I just like em the gsa morgans are just another part of coin history with the coin which matters the most.

You do know that PCGS encapsulates the entire GSA case in their own slab which is much larger, don't you? On the other hand, NGC uses a tamper-resistant tape to seal the GSA case and doesn't have a need for a larger slab.

You won't have any trouble finding one. Found ten of these in safety deposit box after Mom passed last April.

Unfortunately, I bought 2 1881-CC Morgans from an ad on Facebook. I just learned about fake coins, so I checked on the PCGS site, using the Verification link. One of the numbers I had reported:
"Certification number 27886283 has been temporarily DEACTIVATED as a precaution due to its unauthorized use on a known counterfeit circulating". The other one did not show as deactivated, but the picture of the coin itself was much dirtier than the one I got. I am definitely suspicious since, in the details on the PCGS site, it's reported that the coin is in a PCGS Gold Shield holder. The one I have is not a Gold Shield holder. Plus, in as good a shape as the one I got should be worth about $1000. Why would they sell a coin this valuable to me for $26.97 including shipping?

Therefore, all that to say this - I, too, would like to know the weight of the coin in the slab, using that weight to add to any possible counterfeit possiblities, in order to get my money back through Paypal.

This thread is 2 1/2 years old. You should start a new thread posting what you said. The weight of the slab depends upon several different things and they can way different amounts. If the one you bought is fake and the price you paid is a small price for a learning experience.

@David Wier, the key is not the weight of the coin and slab, it is that the PCGS verification matches what it should be. You noted that neither of your purchases match, so you know they are not real.

If the deal seems too good to be true, it is. Also, as a general rule, I don't recommend Facebook as the best marketplace to buy coins (see previous sentence).

Unfortunately many of the cert numbers used by the counterfeiters are good certs without any on-line images. The '283 cert was updated due to all of the reports of the bad coins with that same cert number- I have three.
