Given its pricing, and overall look, I don’t think it is a particularly attractive coin. Ike proofs can have that unattractive blue peripheral toning, with gray looking devices. I don’t see its appeal at all.

That's fair; I like it enough to buy at a premium to a generic proof of that date but not a large premium (considering these go from $10-$30 on eBay, I would bid between $30-$50).

That was what I was thinking. It is high grade, but the toning is unspectacular. A maximum of $50 premium inclusive seems very reasonable to me. It would not be a great resale coin, as Blue peripheral Ikes are a very common toning pattern.

3.9 on the nickel. I will admit I don't have much of a baseline for judging nickels though.

Often, proofs may have some thin film optical beauty, but the mirrors of the proof hide the colors. On non-proof coins, the frosty luster accentuates toning - on proofs you have to view the color at a very narrow angle. IMO, that difference makes proofs less appealing to the toner collector.

If you have to resort to photographic methods like axial photography to see colors, many toned coin collectors will not be happy (or at least underwhelmed) with the coin in hand.

This is one of the few exceptions. It is an attractively toned Morgan Proof. Of course, it is an extreme rarity, and a $65,000 coin.

I do not like that coin at all. It has a lot of hairlines on the face, and the toning is completely underwhelming.

Speaking of toned proofs, I have one to share, so put me on the list.

It is one of the most celebrated coins in the World, irrespective of one liking it or not.. Each to their own. This thread is clearly not for me, anymore. Carry on, folks. :)

Why do you take everything so personally?

That 1895 Morgan proof is hairlined, it is not fully struck, and the toning is not anything spectacular or knock-out. Why would you (or anyone else) consider it one of the "most celebrated coins in the World"?

It can be a highly sought after and genuinely scarce proof (mintage 880), and it can sell for big money ($65,000), but I think saying it is one of the "most celebrated coins in the World" (?) is a bit of overkill and hyperbole. I have never seen it nor heard of it and I've been a collector for 33 years. I do keep up on USA coinage and sales, but I'm not an avid Morgan collector.

Can we at least agree that it is more aptly called one of the "most celebrated Morgan Dollars in the World"?

Again, the intent here is not to be combative, but I think we need to open our minds a little to a universe beyond Morgan Dollars.

Would you not agree that the Simpson example of the 1895 Proof Morgan for sale on Heritage is more attractive than the PF66 example you posted? In my view, they are not even comparable.

I’m not a very experienced coin collector, in fact maybe even the youngest and even the least financially able to collect in a world consumed by people with wealth. With that said I’m not a big Morgan collector in fact I think I only have 4 or 5 Morgan’s in my collection. Am I correct in saying that, that Morgan sells or values at $65k? I am truly shocked at the value of that coin or even the price tag that is attached to such a coin. Even in my dreams I could not afford such a coin. I would like to see it’s colors as the image you provided kind of mutes it @Morgandude11

Agreed. I actually grade it au 58. Look at the luster breaks on the high points I think it’s grossly overgraded but it’s a 1895 Morgan I’d be happy to own. But not as a 66 the Simpson coin while a bit dark. Is original much cleaner and much more appealing especially with the beautiful reflective surfaces

I'd like to give this Jefferson more respect but the colors just don't pop out. The coloring seems dull to me and overall the coin is dark. I'm going to have to go with a 3. No respect, no respect at all!
