Congratulations Joe on an outstanding acquisition. Could not have gone to a better suited owner. John
The auction had plenty of interesting coins. It was fun to watch. NAC did folks in the US a favor by starting it late in there day (7AM Houston start) and holding the auction in English. One of the coins I liked sold for only 3M - the Elagabalus / quadriga bearing the conical stone of Emesa. I was interested in their aes grave hand (with sickle) / grain, but not at the hammer price. At least it was the 3rd lot of the day and I did not have to wait for a time to bid.
This brings to mind the series of threads "What your budget buys" on CoinTalk (cf. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/what-your-budget-buys-30-edition.302412/). I think we need to add another thread to this series: "What your $400K+ buys."
I'm late to the party in congratulating @AncientJoe on acquiring this coin of important historical interest.
Article on the Gold Eid Mar, even @Barry Murphy got a quote in. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/science...-expected-fetch-5-MILLION-auction-London.html
Thanks for the link @Mat . The article by IAN RANDALL FOR MAILONLINE says the coin is cast - Over two millennia old, the token is one of three of the same design known to have been cast in gold, making it the 'holy grail' for ancient coin collectors, experts said.He used the same word to describe EID MAR denarii - Nearly 100 of such 'Ides of March' coins are known, according to the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation — however, most are cast in silverDo they know something we dont? Or.... do we know something Ian does not?
Congratulations on you Victory. I don't collect Ancients but your collection is Fantastic! A pleasure to see it.
Maybe, although that was dollars not pounds. It would seem odd that the Daily Mail is following Coin Talk. Barry Murphy
Oh, what a disappointment ! You should reconsider, I would really like the guy who bought it to be someone I know Q
Agreed. However, whenever I GOOGLE various Ancient coin questions, MANY times Coin Talk pops up, and various conversations are shown. If the Daily Mail googled this subject, the Thread may had popped up to the top of their search, especially since it is a recent discussion. You, being an Influencer, would had been quoted from this public forum. Unfortunately, how the info without a currency is interpreted (Dollars or Pounds), would be skewed towards their backgrounds as Pounds.
