I recently purchased this nice antoninianus of Allectus from a uk seller , it seemed ok to me but some one has cast doubt on it so just looking for opinions. I think it’s just roughness in the fields due to being found ? 23mm 4.4g Came with old envelope too thanks in advance for any advice received!
@Tony1982 , I am not an expert, nor purport that I can give a judgement. Personally, If I saw it as an offering, I would buy it. However, I would have to feel comfortable with the SELLER, price (is it too LOW), etc. Here is my version of yours (consider MY roughness of fields!): RI Allectus 293-296 CE 4.38g London radiate cuirassed AE Ant PAX RIC 28
When it comes to Allectus (I've never had one), I only have eyes for the ones with the galley reverse, for some reason.
Me too. It makes a change from all the standing figures London produced. But anything Allectus is quite expensive (which is why mine is somewhat imperfect!). Allectus, bronze quinarius, 293-296, London. 20mm, 2.9g. IMP C ALLECTVS P F AVG. VIRTVS AVG, QL (RIC 55 London).

Thanks everyone, I like the galley ones myself but I was really after just a decent portrait for the price. He’s an interesting emperor from the period , just need a decent carausius now to complete the set !
Good luck finding a Carausius! Fun to have the sets. One of mine: RI Carausius usurper in Britain CE 287–293 BI Ant 4.7g 24mm London radiate cuirassed - PAX AVG Pax stndg l branch scepter S—P RIC V 475 or an ratty version of mine...
I don't think there's anything wrong with the OP coin either. If that's wrong because it's a bit pitted and rough, there can't be too many genuine coins found. For those who like the Allectus galley reverse, this is mine. I paid a couple hundred dollars for mine 6 years ago, which doesn't seem particularly expensive. Ok, it is a bit off-centre, but the consequential detail loss is minimal.
Some lovely coins of carausius and Allectus here , I really like the ship design. They do seem hard to acquire in good grades , mostly due to being found in the uk by detectors. It’s definitely reassured me about the authenticity of mine though , it helps having a few more opinions when your in doubt !
I couldn't find an Allectus fitting both my taste and budget at the same time ... It doesn’t appear to be a die match to a known Allectus fake as far as I can tell. The only thing I see from the photos is it looks a little tooled or harshly cleaned on the reverse under the Λ. Why do you think it might be suspect?
