Actually, no. I do not use social media; consume news through a plethora of sources, so as not to be skewed - and I READ it, not watch the silly sensationalist videos; watch shows I like with no ads; CT; read a lot of books; fish; target shoot; meditate; and enjoy Grandkids. Oh, and all the while, Blue is with me.

 

I like Pawn Stars. It is innocent TV fun, and I like it because Rick seems to be genuinely interested in the things I collect, like antique books, antique weapons, and and ancient coins. There have been many ancient coins featured on the show and this is good exposure to the hobby.

Here is an example where even Rick was surprised at how cheap Byzantine gold can get and ended up paying too much for it (quite rare for that show).

 

The show isn’t “scripted” in that Rick has no clue what the expert is going to say in terms of authenticity or value, nor does the person selling the item. That part is 100% unscripted. they do that so the reactions are real. Obviously there is some set up and writing as the experts he calls in aren’t just down the street.

Hold onto your hats, ladies and gentlemen: About 4 years ago, we were visiting Las Vegas and decided to check out the Pawn Stars shop. As we were browsing, they notified us that they were closing a little early to shoot an episode. My wife's niece (an attractive 40 yr old) was asked to be part of the "milling crowd" during the taping. She talked them into allowing her mother, my wife and I to be part of that crowd. They promptly took us into the "secret" duplicate room where Chumley would be featured. They say Chumley is smarter than he looks, I say not by much. It took him about 15 minutes to memorize two lines and then he adlibbed anyhow. We were told to mill around and not to stop or look at the camera. Right after the taping, we were told not to divulge the "secret" room to anyone, and that the episode would be aired "in the future", and they couldn't (or wouldn't) give us an exact date. The kicker was that the individual who was trying to pawn the object to Chumley came over and talked to us as we were leaving. It seems he was a paid actor who had quite a few gigs with the Pawn Shop over the years. He said it was normal to use paid actors rather than the real people who actually owned the articles and presented them originally. Talk about a burst bubble! Nothing was real, except for Chumley's ineptness. And their prices on slabbed coins were about twice market price. You've got to give Rick credit, quite a showman who turned a so-so business into a hot made-for-TV product.
