Yes it happened in the early 1930's but this is a different time and a different world! Would you allow the government to buy your gold coins for cheap prices? :D

Ya know, if everyone keeps starting threads which open the door for more and more political commentary, Doug @GDJMSP will probably start losing his beauty sleep.

It could happen given the right circumstances, however, the subject could turn political, so, if I possessed gold, and I'm not indicating I do, I would not give it up and hide it somewhere safe.

My advice to anyone who invests in gold: if you own it, keep it close and tell no one!

Yep, The Gubmint will go back on the gold standard, then confiscate everybody's gold so they have enough holdings. But if you act now, we'll sell you these gorgeous, easy-to-hide American Gold Eagles, each holding ONE-TENTH TROY OUNCE of GOLD, for just $349.99 each (plus shipping and handling)! Buy ten, and we'll cut the price to $329.99, a discount of FOUR TIMES THEIR FACE VALUE!

Act now, because there's a limit to how much gold we're willing to trade for worthless fiat paper. (okay, at this price, there actually isn't a limit to how much we're willing to trade...)

Problem with this worry is that when the US government forced the turn in of gold back in the 1930's they did it at market rate. I guess if the government paid market rate for the gold it would not be such a huge deal to me. Most people who propose such things make the assumption the government will do it at below market rates, but that is a huge leap. At that point I would Ron Swanson it and bury it around somewhere only I know about it. :)

    I love Ron Swanson.

You've gotta remember that back in 1933 the US was emerging from a severe depression. Individual gold ownership had skyrocketed amongst the general public due to the US leaving the gold standard AND mistrust in the US Dollar.

Both of the above trigger factors are missing, and I don't see the lack of faith in the US Dollar emerging with the US Dollar still being used as the de-factor world standard against which all other currencies are measured.

You'd have a financial collapse or political upheaveal such that the LAST THING you'd worry about is your gold.

Wow, looks a lot like me first thing in the morning. I have a little more hair on the sides, and not as droopy ears, but pretty close! :)
