ASI have said previously, I am very into UK Elizabeth II, and George V and VI coins. The seller on eBay made me a great offer on this coin, so I jumped. It just came in the mail a few minutes ago.
I'm really worried about the green on this coin. It should not be there, and needs to be removed before the coin is damaged.
Not an issue—it is going to cracked out, and will get a verdigris treatment, before it goes to PCGS. The albums they came in were green, so that might be it, but I have a close friend who does conservation.
Just sent pictures to my friend, who does coin conservation. It is not Verdigris, according to him. It is green album toning from one of the albums widely used in the UK. So, I think it is just going to stay in the ANACS holder as is.
I don't know what "green album toning" is... but whatever that is, its not toning. That is some foreign substance on the surface.
"Green album toning" on a copper-nickel coin to me means it corroded while in an album, and unlike PVC goo, isn't easily removed. What kind of album was it in?
I have no idea. I bought it certified like it is. My friend, who is an expert on conservation, was not concerned. It does not look like corrosion to my eye—it looks more like toning, while holding the coin in hand. PVC? I would assume that ANACS can determine PVC damage. Don’t know what else to say. I will definitely have somebody else look at it. I have 30 day return privileges on the coin, so let’s see what this person says. The friend from NGC, who does conservation and has been a grader was not concerned. Thanks, guys, for raising legitimate concerns. Since I am more experienced in Silver coins, I assumed it was album toning. The Brits use green albums, and all the earlier Royal Mint boxes from that era were either dark green, or royal blue. I appreciate it!
I guess even if the person from NGC wasn't concerned, seeing a band of green like that on a coin is a quick turn-off for many people. If it weren't there, we'd be discussing the coins merits, not its detractors.
If it is toning, it isn’t a turn off to me. I do appreciate the concern. It isn’t crusty, like corrosion, so it may be some color transfer. I have seen the boxes the original packaging from the mint came in, and they were blueish/ green. Here is a coin in the original package. Color transfer in the rim area:
"Color transfer" might be even worse! That is essentially staining, and is even harder to remove than some verdigris or PVC.
I don't see anything particularly wrong with it. Anacs should have caught verdigris or PVC. I'd lean towards toning as well, but if it bothers you then there is no sense of keeping.
That was why I bought it. I saw it as toning. Rather obvious to me. I am not experienced in UK coins, but having collected for years, I know what damage looks like. ANACS, and an NGC friend of mine vindicate my opinion. I swear, the negativity around here is at absolute maximum. There is a difference between constructive criticism, and nit picking. Some people have to be 100% right all the time.
