As many of you know, I've been banned on the PCGS forums. That's too bad because I miss the Humor thread and Picture Friday thread the most. I still check them out each week.

For those interested, check out the discussion on the Matte Proof Boone half dollars. Members are wondering why the coins only grade 63. The answer should be very OBVIOUS!

See if you can figure it out.

Not familiar with how matte proofs should look. Is a clue of what is wrong the white marks tracing the hairline at the back?

If I saw these normally I would agree with one poster they look like they have been antiqued.

Was the lack of any real detail on the reverses deliberate? The figures, their clothing and hair etc all look flat and lack any real definition

Don't over think this. Look at the coins.

Their surface is "special." It is called "Matte." That's why they look so different.
Now, Breen gave them a much higher grade than PCGS. Besides the passage of time and changes in the grading standards, why did they only grade 63 at PCGS?

Hint: After a coin is graded MS, what thins determine the #?

What are you thinking? READ THE DESCRIPTION...the coins are EXTREMELY detailed.

I'm guessing the matte finish was applied after the coin was minted? Technically should be PR details, altered surfaces....

Matte finish did a number on the luster.

Luster is poor and there are faint lines over the fields and some of the devices

These are graded PR63, not MS63, so I'm guessing it's the presence of hairlines, which I have always thought was the main grade limiting factor on uncirculated proof coins

Not sure what I'm missing, but there isn't any photo(s) attached to this post on my browser, so I can't see what others are talking about.

I think this thread is being referred to: https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1041712/unique-pds-matte-proof-classic-commems
I am not sure why the coins have this grade.

After a coin is determined MS, or PF, I believe surface preservation is the primary factor in the determining the numerical grade. Perhaps it's because of the spots on the coins? Also, there are a lot of lines to the right of the portrait on the S mint coin.

Thanks. Ain't going to happen as I hate having to "work" at trying to figure out what the poster means. If I had adequate download available and not Hughes Net, I might. Even if the poster had taken the time to post a link, I wouldn't have clicked on it. But maybe that's just me.

Looks like beginners using acid on coins to have a matte surface. Is this another 1959 wheat cent?
