I will continue to silenty read about ancients. I hope to learn from the ones who have the ability to get over themselves and stay.

So, as long as you're not directing an attack against an individual but A WHOLE COMMUNITY, you feel it's okay to be uncivil and disrespectful?
No, it doesn't make me uncomfortable. I do think it would be fair and useful for the same message to be posted where the original offender/s usually hang out.
No, I don't agree it's appropriate, but that's besides the point. In this case, I simply think it's against the rules and not at all helpful to the discussion.

For the most part the Ancient section stays above reproach. I can see why most of them feel tarnished, or is it that a few of them took it close to home? Yeah, the few of US over on the other side we lose are cool all the time. We don't play the same ball game right? MAD respects for the ancients section for not having an injury day since I remember and I have been around for a while.

I'm really glad I missed that whole thing; maybe I would have sought to quote and refute, too.

To the ancient-lovers here: don't feel bad. Don't take the pinned note personally. We've all had a reminder,* and I think we should just leave the pinned note at that: a reminder from someone who has done a lot for us in creating this website (I think it's him, anyway, and if not, he's certainly administering much of what happens here). So don't feel upset. Keep calm and keep ancient-ing on! (Apparently that was the best I could do with that one!)

*Added a few minutes after posting: To be honest, I don't think the rule against quoting something too political is really mentioned in the rules. At most, it's implied. Going forward, I think the best thing to do would be to remove the sticky note after a few days, and simply explicitly say in the rules post that quoting forbidden material is also verboten, while the correct course of action would be to report the offending material. That's just my two obols' worth.

Wow I missed all the fun! And I was bored yesterday... Joking aside one of the things that surprised me about this forum is how civil it is. I am here only since February but I believe this is the first time a mod had to remove a thread...

I would like the pinned post to be removed after a day or two for practical reasons. As other people have stated this is a fairly active forum and new threads end up on the second page fairly quickly. Interesting write-ups can be easily missed especially by the people who do not log in daily. Having unecessary pinned threads occupying the top spot won't help in that respect.

One thing I have learned by being a member of online communities over the years is that it is totally pointless to have political/ideological debates online. Nothing positive comes out from a flame-war. No-one will change their views because you ranted about yours and society will not be affected in the slightest...So why do it? I think the mistake people make is that they assume others share their political/ideological views just because they are into the same hobby as they are. So, such posts should be avoided as they can easily trigger an unfriendly debate that has nothing to do with the forum subject. I wanted to post a news link the other day about some people considering removing a statue of Constantine the Great from an English cathedral because he did not free the slaves even though he passed a law making the killing of slaves illegal. I decided not to go ahead with posting it as I could see it easily becoming political even though Constantine is definitely not off-topic here.

I bowl with a guy whose political views are at the total opposite perspective from mine. When we first discovered each others views, we had some loud arguments. We both discovered that we actually like each other as friends political viewpoints aside. So we have come to an understanding that we will not discuss politics that way we can stay friends and bowling partners. It has worked out very well. I consider him a good friend.

My mother was very smart. She told us kids to never discuss politics or religion, so I try to live by that rule and others she instilled in us. By in large I like everyone on this forum. I have only ignored one or two people and that had nothing to do with taboo topics.
    Ditto!

I am just amazed at how many people that come to this forum just to stir the pot so to say and spew out mean things. They don't have the morals or ethics I was raised with that is for sure. Just a reminder that not all people out there are good people.

Ya mean kinda like this one ?
    https://www.cointalk.com/threads/listen-up-all-of-ya.326058/

That one's posted in Announcements, for EVERYBODY to see. And yeah, it had a sticky pin too for a long time. And yes it's been done in other forum sections too. And when I feel the message has been conveyed sufficiently, meaning so it will not be forgotten, then and only then do I remove the pin.

Why ? Because they broke the rules. And contrary to what seems to be popular opinion, it was not just members who "only visit" the Ancients section who broke the rules. A few long established, and who typically only post in the Ancients section, members also broke the rules. And I'm not talking about breaking them by quoting previous comments, I'm talking about original, rule breaking comments they made all on their own. That's why they need a reminder, because they had obviously forgotten what the rules here are. And the rules apply to everybody here, I don't care who ya are.

Uhhh - can you please tell me exactly who was punished, and in what way ? There was no punishment, none at all. The pinned post I made is merely a reminder that the forum rules do apply to everybody, even those in the ancients section. So it's kinda hard to call that heavy-handed, wouldn't ya say ?

I would also ask if you perhaps missed the first paragraph of my post ? This one -

Ya know, usually I don't need to worry too much about you guys - meaning those of you who frequent and typically post at least for the most part in the Ancients section. Most of the time ya follow the rules. That was not the case yesterday !

Ya see, I was readily acknowledging that my intervention in this forum section is rarely needed, I can even say very rarely needed. But, I am at the same time pointing out that with the thread that was removed, it was needed. And as I said above, that's why the reminder was needed. And those individuals who needed that reminder, they know who they are. And it's not necessary that you, or anybody else, know who they are.

Now if you feel offended because that was done, about all I can tell ya is to deal with it. And if you don't like it here, well, you're welcome to come and go as ya please. Everybody is, always has been, and always will be.

    John Skelton Morgan man!

I learned long ago that online discussions meant to change someone's mind is useless. It doesn't accomplish anything except a feeling in each person that they are right and the other person is an idiot. It doesn't change anything, so why bother?

Besides, if you must engage, take it to a private conversation. Or else ignore the person. No sense getting your heart rate up.

If it causes this much grief why not go directly to the culprit discipline the person personally, remove the thread, and/or the account! Why do we all have to think we were part of the insult... No disrespect just my opinion.

Are some people on the U.S. Coins forum really so bored that they have nothing to do but come here for the specific purpose of insulting people, calling them names, and stirring up trouble? It seems that way, because it happens regularly, and has happened twice just in this thread. "Outside agitators" is usually a false characterization in real life, but it seems rather accurate here. It also seems to me that an announcement with a sticky pin in other forums advising people that it's inappropriate to do that sort of thing might be a good idea.

Well that statement lasted a long time.....But here's why....
Not long ago I made what I thought was, at the time quite a dry joke, and didn't really think any more about it until I read the young lady's reply!..I had obviously offended her..:oops:....I wrote to her privately giving my sincere apologies :sorry: which was accepted with no hard feelings....Hopefully this made her feel better it certainly made me feel better, air cleared and we move on....I think what I'm trying to say is that we all make mistakes and in general these can be rectified privately between intelligent adults...

I'm still in the dark as to actually what happened! As the reference thread has been deleted and I have no idea what rules were broken or how??...

I'm still not happy with having this tag at the top of the Ancient Forum more to the fact of 'would be collectors' looking to join a Forum...Not great advertising!...
But guess I'll just have to 'deal with it'!

I must say that reading through some of the reply posts I've been quite shocked by some of the aggresive, rude and down right nasty wordings!...Hasten to add the posters names are not familiar so probably not form the Ancient section...

The thread was already removed in its entirety yesterday. However, as many times as it's repeated that the "guilt" of the original offender (who came here to push his theory that COVID-19 is a "hoax perpetrated by the xxxxxx's") and those who responded (including people with family members who have died from COVID-19 or are currently ill with it, and others who live in the former epicenter and saw the consequences with their own eyes) was equal, the admins themselves originally recognized that this simply isn't true, and that not all rule-breaking is created equal: when I woke up early yesterday, I saw that all of the original offender's comments had been deleted, while none of the comments by those who responded had been deleted. It was only later on that a different approach was taken -- one that reminds me of the common situation in which the school bully, and the victim who fights back, are reprimanded equally for breaking the rule against fighting. I understand the relevant rules about replying to rule-breakers better now, and won't do that kind of thing ever again, as upsetting as such incidents may be. But there are, in fact, degrees of guilt.
