Found this 1976 dime that is extremely interesting and I cant find any other examples of this type of error in any web searches The dime is considerably smaller than another dime from 76 that i had to compare with. Also the dime weighs 1.9 grams. I found info on other dimes weighing in at 1.9 grams on the web, however they appear to be a correct planchet missing the layer that coats the coin. This is not the case with this dime without a doubt. Let me know what you think is going on with it please. Thanks

It appears that the coin has been "spooned". You will find many such threads, here, that discuss this form of PMD. ~ Chris

I'm not sure what "spooned" is however I accidentally left some of the evidence out by notmentioning in the op that the coin possibly appears to be a copper compound. Here is the coin from the side view. It's on the left, mercury dime in center, and a roosevelt on the right.

What is a "spooned" coin? Also why would post mint damage make a coin smaller in diameter and

Spooning means the edge was hit by a "spoon" or hammer over and over. Most of the time this is done to make a ring. This coin is not an error it is damage.

Businesse strike Dimes minted after 1964 are clad over a copper core. Clad is composed of Cupro-Nickel which is 75% Copper and 25% Nickel. Exposure to the environment will tone the Copper.

Welcome to CT. As mentioned above, it appears your dime has PMD, post mint damage, by someone using a tool to hit the rim, hence the term "spooned."

It could also be a dryer coin. Regardless, it was damaged after it left the mint and there are countless ways for PMD to occur, so no sense it getting worried about how the damaged occurred.

Are you referring to this image the OP posted in which he placed the spooned coin on top of a normal coin for comparison?

I seem to have a similar dime although not spooned like the other shown above. The one I own has the edge as normal but only weighs 1.12 gr. It seems to be 1/2 the thickness, and missing a portion of one of its clad layers.

Still trying to figure out how to add images. (just joined)

    Hi Scott. Welcome to Cointalk.

It would be best if you start a new thread. Pictures are needed for assessment of your coin.
