Last week, I posted a GTG 1950-D Jefferson Nickel NGC thread and the coin was very well received with most people split between MS66 & MS67 5FS. I would like to offer two more potential 1950-D Jefferson submissions for your GTG consideration, this is the first of the two. I will be submitting this coin to NGC in the near future. Please GTG that NGC will assign of the 1950-D Jefferson Nickel shown below. I have attached a poll for you to cast your vote and you may select up to 3 different things: the numerical grade, 5 Full Steps, & + grade. Remember, please vote in the attached poll and vote for both the numerical grade and the whether you think the steps are full or not. As always, comments welcome!
I'm at MS67 with 5 FS. I think that the 5 FS is pretty clearly present. The coin also looks amazing clean and thus I think it earns a 67. There is a little chatter on the jaw line that might bump it down to a 66...but I think overall eye appeal locks it in as a 67.
66 fs ...this one is nice but 1 point weaker than the original (that one looked to have blazing luster while this one is a bit more subdued)
Okay guys, I was playing a little trick on all of you. I posted this exact coin back in October, and I haven't submitted it yet because I was waiting for my submission to get big enough. This coin resided in ANACS plastic and has been cracked out for resubmission to NGC. The voting this time around was much more sparse than the October poll, but lets see how the guys who voted on both polls fared. @Collecting Nut : MS65 to MS64 @Paddy54 : MS65 5FS to MS66 @ldhair : MS66 5FS to MS65 5FS @ddoomm1 : MS66 5FS to MS66 @ddddd : MS66 5FS both times @kSigSteve : MS66 5FS to MS67 5FS @Razz : MS66 5FS to MS65 For those interested in viewing the original GTG thread, here it is GTG 1950-D Jefferson Nickel The photos are a little different because the first was taken in the slab whereas the new thread, the coin was raw. That said, I think this new thread shows the inherent subjectivity in grading pretty well. We are quick to slam the TPGs when we think they make a mistake, and we have the expectation that they should always return the same grade when grading the same coin a second time. I consider ALL the people listed above to be excellent graders, but only one person of the 7 was able to duplicate the exact same grade on a coin they graded twice. But no worries, we all have a chance at redemption when NGC returns their grade in a few months, good luck!
Does this mean I can keep complaining since I guessed the same both times. In all seriousness, it is a good point. We should note that all 7 people were within a point. My gripe is more with the multiple point swings (especially ones where the dollar swing is significant).
I've collected Jefferson Nickels for a long time, and I've seen hundreds of 50-Ds. This coin is one of the absolute best I have ever seen and has a legitimate shot at MS67 5FS. What I'm saying is that we might just get that 2 point swing after all. Now I know that we are talking about 2 different grading companies, but even then, they shouldn't be that far apart. I really have a gut feeling that NGC is going to find a reason to keep this out of MS67 5FS and I will nail the grade with an MS66+ 5FS.
I know that we can't avoid two point swings, I would just like it to be more rare (and almost non-existent where it's a big swing, like a 65/66 going to 67/68 and making a sub $1k coin into a top pop coin that is worth many multiples). And when it is Anacs/ICG to PCGS/NGC it is a bit different, but you're right that they shouldn't be that far apart either. I hope you do get the 67 on this one as Anacs has been conservative on a few occasions over the last few years.
Follow up question regarding NGC and FS Are they (NGC) going to call a strike of 5 full steps 5FS, even if the steps are interrupted by PMD? I know (knew?) that with Franklin FBL's, the lines had to be continuous, and not interrupted, either by a weak strike, or PMD. I quickly looked for the info on NGC's site, but figured it would be quicker to ask here. The 2 nicks/lines between the C and E is why I went No FS, so I'm just trying to clarify/learn. Thanks!
The more prominent nick only cuts the steps between the 5th and 6th steps, which don't count. The smaller nick is too shallow to cut all the way through the steps. PCGS would definitely call this full steps and in my experience, NGC has softened their hardline stance on this issue over the years. I'm pretty confident that both services would deem this coin full steps.
