EDIT - it turned out to be a fake (read thread below)

    Hi all

It's a bit unbelievable, but I have made my first Ancient coin purchase for the year.

I mostly blame COVID-19, as I have been hesitant to order coins from overseas given the travel restrictions and issues with international shipping.

But, I found this from a reputable local dealer! Very pleased with the quality for the price. I wouldn't exactly say it was bargain basement price, but the wife also wouldn't raise an eyebrow.

    Cheers

Congrats, fantastic coin. I have only bought one from overseas in early Jan just before the Aussie dollar tanked so I doubt any more coins from overseas this year from me. Who is the local seller if you don't mind me asking?

Yep, a refund has already been confirmed.

Thanks to the good CT folk, particularly @Mat, for alerting me. I guess no purchase for now.

Sorry, I don't like being the one to post that kind of news. It's upsetting when someone does it to me, but I appreciate it.

Sorry about that. Some fakes are really so good they can fool some experts. We've had discussions before about dealers/experts being fooled.

BTW, here is my example of the coin you purchased, and I hope it's not fake. @Mat?

Nice example, hope it's not fake as well.

The dealer indicated that the coin fooled him because they'd put some sort of resin over it to hide the telltale signs (he must have literally ran over to the cabinet, pulled it out, and placed it under the microscope).

I prefer a fake be pointed out by PM first.
But that is just one opinion... so kind of worthless.

It's happened to me and I certainly appreciated it at the time.

Yes, I can see why one might prefer that.

In this instance, it was fine from my perspective to do it in the thread. And this way, people can read through for themselves. Although I've thought about amending the title of the thread, so people know before they click that the purchase was a misfire.

I can understand your point. But I will throw this out there;I like the idea of others being able to learn from my mistakes. Be it people who use google searches and come up with the thread or the regular members on here.

I think that providing resources and education is a crucial part of this hobby. I love that people here are so free with their knowledge and are more than willing to share that with others.
